Vallejo, California is a small town located in Marin County, California. The population was 7,868 at the 2010 census. Vallejo is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. It is bordered by the cities of Sausalito and Tiburon to the east and north, Redwood City to the west and Tomales Bay to the south. The first humans living in Vallejo arrived around 10,000 BC when they started trading with Native Americans. The town was founded by John Cranch in 1853 as a result of his land grant from Governor Manuel Folsom.. In 1854, John Cranch's grandson, George Cranch took over leadership of the community and renamed it Vallejo after himself and his ancestor Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. The original adobe buildings were replaced by brick buildings in 1875-1876 due to anearthquake that destroyed many homes in nearby Tiburon. The Vallejo area has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years. The first European to visit the area was Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portolà in 1769. The area became a part of Mexico following Mexican independence from Spain in 1821. California claimed sovereignty over the region in 1848, and Vallejo became an incorporated city on February 26, 1850. In 1854, the first post office was established at Vallejo with mail service conducted via stagecoach from San Francisco. The town developed a strong economy based on its access to water resources and its location along the Sacramento River. However, during the late 1800s, Vallejo experienced rapid growth as a result of new transportation and communication technologies such as railroads and telephone lines. However, during World War II Vallejo was one of the most bombed towns in California with Japanese bombing raids occurring throughout 1942-1945. After the war ended, rapid economic development resumed as new businesses were founded in downtown Vallejo and elsewhere in southern California. Today,Valley City is home to many large companies including Qualcomm Incorporated (QCOM) and Intel Corporation (INTC).
