Tactical coffee has been a part of the Ukiah community for over 50 years. The first time that it was served here was at the Regency Theater on April 6, 1954. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Sipper had just moved from Seattle to Ukiah and were looking for a place to start their new life. They saw an advertisement in the local paper for a coffee shop called Coffee Gallery. They walked in and saw that it was run by two young men named Jack Weems and Cliff Martin who also did waitressing work at the Regency Theatre. They asked if they could buy some coffee, and Jack told them he would bring it out right away! It wasn't until later that they realized that this shop was actually where their first cup of coffee came from! The popularity of tactical coffee grew rapidly throughout the early 1960s when people began to see its potential as a key ingredient in any successful caffeine-based operation. In 1963, Coffee Gallery became the first cafe in Ukiah to offer tactical coffee under the name "Coffee House." Since then, many other cafes have followed suit, giving our community one of the most comprehensive collections of tactical coffees on Earth! Today, there are many different types ofTactical Coffee available through cafes all over North America including: Douglas Fir Dark Roast; Honduran Pea Pod; Nicaraguan Costa Rican Robusta; Kenyan Arabica beans; Guatemalan Classic Pour Over; Colombian Jugo El Negro beans - each with its own unique flavor profile and story behind its origins!

In 1978, Ukiah became part of Portsmouth Township through annexation by neighboring Livermore Valley after years-long negotiations between both municipalities.
