The next wave of settlers were the Soquel Valley Valleys people who arrived in1876 and began farming land that would later become Ukiah. In 1879, a group of Mormon missionaries from Nauvoo settled in Ukiah and started construction on what would eventually become the First United Methodist Church (FUMC). The church was completed in 1887 and became one of the most influential institutions within Ukiah society.
