Fremont in 1851 as an agricultural and ranching town on the Rancho San Pablo north of today's Hayward. The name derives from Spanish stockta meaning "plain". The City of Stockton was incorporated on April 20, 1872. In 1915, it became the capital of California and remains so today with 1 million residents within its boundaries. The first European explorers to visit present-day Stockton were Pedro Menéndez de Avilés and Santiago López de Legazpi on October 29, 1542 when they sighted the Sacramento River and named it Vallarta after the captaincy general of Mexico who had sent them there as exploration troops under Diego Rivera y Méndez.
