The USS Constitution (1845-1846) was a United States Navy ship that served in the Mexican War and the American Civil War. The ship was decommissioned in 1864 and sold to the Southern Pacific Railroad. It was renumbered as the SS Constitution Bayard in 1887, and served as a passenger train until withdrawn from service in 1951.
South San Francisco is a city in San Francisco County, California. The population was 71,717 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay and has a maritime history dating back to 1836 when it was part of Alcatraz Island. In 1846, the United States acquired land in what is now South San Francisco from Mexico for $20 million. In 1849, the southern end of San Francisco Peninsula became part of California. The following year, Congress passed the Act for theestablishment of a State of California and by 1850, most of the peninsula had become part of what is now California. In 1851, President 51st U.S. president James K Polk issued Executive Order 9200 which granted land to Native Americans in eastern San Francisco Bay Area for their use as agricultural land. As a result, much of South San Francisco was developed as farmland with few buildings or residents until after World War II when it became an increasingly residential area filled with soldiers and their families who used the nearby naval base for military operations and housing development during peacetime.
