South Gate is a city located in San Bernardino County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 54,651. It is the principal city of South Gate Unified School District and was founded in 1887 as a small agricultural community on the eastern edge of present-day South Gate. The name comes from Spanish for "gate" or "bridge." The first south gate post office opened in 1888. In 1907, South Gate became part of San Bernardino County and incorporated as a town. The population increased rapidly due to new arrivals from Southern California and other parts of America during the 1910s and 1920s. By 1930, there were over 100 businesses in South Gate with a payroll greater than $1 million. World War II led to an even higher increase in population when many US military personnel moved into southern San Bernardino County because jobs were available at nearby Camp Powhatan while Poppahatta Lake was used for training troops stationed overseas. Some members of the military remained until their retirement years; by 1951 there were more than 400 residents living in SouthGate and its vecinity thanks to high growth rates throughout postwar decades attributable to easy access to major highways and ample job opportunities within commuting distance both northward (to cities such as Irvine and San Diego) andsouthward (to Los Angeles). During this time period also came rapid development around town including the construction of light rail transit lines which reached SouthGate by 1970; followed bythe opening of large shopping malls adjacent to downtown that have continued to grow despite competition from neighboring communities over recent decades; now home primarily to local businesses along with hordes of visitors each year who enjoy all that SouthGate has to offer including world-renowned attractions like Gadsden State Park which offers hiking/mountain biking trails, golf courses, fishing ponds, waterfalls etc.; cultural attractions such as art galleries/museums offering traditional Mexican music performances etc.; agriculture: now comprising much larger amounts of cropping land than ever before with fruits/veggies being dominant crops; continuing redevelopment towards increasing densities taking place inside existing housing developments for various reasons including ease freeway access plus rising values associated with real estate investment opportunities outside SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY limits
