Santa Paula, California is located in the San Joaquin Valley of California and is part of the Elsinore Unified School District. The population of Santa Paula was 5,853 at the 2010 census. As one of the fastest growing cities in California, Santa Paula has seen an influx of new residents as well as businesses and institutions over the past few years. The city began to form in 1851 when a group of farmers purchased land that would become Santa Paula. The name “Santa Paula” was given to the town by Father José de Rivera for his actions during a religious revival meeting on October 25th, 1851. At first, settlers only built small log homes and sold goods from their stores along Main Street known as “The Row”. In 1855, a post office was established by J.H. Laughlin with two buildings on Main Street which served until 1865 when they were replaced by a schoolhouse and jail. In 1868, John Cavanaugh laid out what is now downtown Santa Paula on land he donated to the city. He named it after himself – John Cavanaugh Park – because he believed that if people knew where they could find good food and entertainment they would move to Santa Paula more often than not! By 1870, downtown had grown enough that a courthouse and jail were constructed next door to City Hall on present-day First Street near Ponderosa Peak Boulevard (now River Road). As business started booming in Santa Paula, so too did its population growth; by 1910 there were 617 residents living in downtown alone! That same year saw construction begin on what would become America’s first movie theater – Regal Theater across from First Street between Ponderosa Peak Boulevard and Seventh Avenue North (now Harrison Drive). The movie theater became an important local cultural center for many years before it was destroyed in 1984 by fire! In 1916 an ice cream parlor opened up at Fourth Avenue North (now Railroad Avenue) which became one of the largest social clubs in town until it closed its doors in 1979 due to membership restrictions placed upon it by ordinance change passed by then-Mayor Don Armstrong! In 1920 Auto Supply Company opened its doors at Third Street between Broadway and Ponderosa Peak Boulevard which quickly became one of Sacramento’s most popular shopping areas due to its wide variety of products available at low prices! It wasn’t long before other businesses followed suit with Auto Supply becoming one of Sacramento’s most iconic districts! After years of growth throughout much of Downtown South Pasadena (), Villa Park () annexed portions thereof beginning with ThirdStreet southward from I-5 northward through Willowbrook Parkway eastward into Villa Park proper (). Santa Paula has been a part of the San Francisco Bay Area since 1853 when it was founded by Jedediah Smith as an unincorporated community on Rancho Bodega Creek. It became an incorporated city on January 5, 1998. The first post office in Santa Paula was established in 1853. The name honors General José Antonio de la Peña y Costilla who fought against Mexico and helped to expel them from California in 1821. In 1865, the town site was bought by Colonel George Armstrong Custer for $10 per acre ($100 total). When he died in 1876, his widow donated the land to the City of Santa Paula for use as a parkland. The city changed its name to Santa Paula on July 4th, 1898 due to objections from nearby Menlo Park which had already become an incorporated city that year. In 1916 Captain John Wolkentin developed White Sands Recreation Area which included what is now downtown Santa Paula and parts of today's east side and west side streets such as Alma Street and Pacific Avenue. At one time this area housed over 20 small businesses including several breweries and distilleries serving up local wine while also selling munitions during World War I; however these businesses closed or moved out after prohibition began in 1919 banning alcohol sales in most U S states except Alaska and Hawaii (the territories did not have Prohibition).
