In Santa Paula, California, coffee was first roasted by the Dutch in 1693. It took until 1868 for the first coffee beans to be grown in Santa Paula. The town's first grocery store opened in 1904 and the first cafe opened in 1912.
Santa Paula is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, United States. The population was 1,641 at the 2010 census. It is part of Fresno County. Santa Paula is located on the east bank of the San Joaquin River, about northeast of Fresno and northwest of Stockton. The first European to visit what is now Santa Paula was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 7, 1542. He named it "Isla de Nuestra Señora de la resistencia" after his Marianist religious group's patron saint, but he never landed there and only saw a cluster of Mission Indians working on an irrigation canal near modern-day town center when he passed by on his expedition from San Francisco Bay to Monterey Peninsula on November 11, 1542. The mission buildings still stand today: In 1853 they were used as a military barracks for troops quartered in the area; they have since been turned into local historical museums. On December 12, 1850, Mexican soldiers under Governor Antonio José Ygnacio María Fajardo burned down both missions in what became known as the Santa Paula Massacre (). A year later Mexico ceded control over California to United States forces and Santa Paula remained one of several U.S.-administered mission towns until Californios gained full independence in 1849. As early as 1847 there had been talk among some residents of Stockton about moving eastward along the riverbank into what would eventually become Fresno County; this idea died out because no money could be found to build roads or other infrastructure needed for such a move. In 1848 propertyowner Jens Ludwig founded an agricultural colony with forty acres (160 m²) called Sonoma Valley which soon grew into one of Northern California's largest winegrowing regions. Sonoma Valley’s growth led Ludwig to open up much more land north and westward including parts now belonging to Santa Clara County that were then virgin territory undeveloped by anyone other than Native Americans due to their lack of development skills.
