The Santa Paula Air Force Base is one of the largest and most important military installations in California. It is home to The United States Air Force Academy, which offers Air Force enlisted students a unique opportunity to attend an internationally renowned school. The base also houses the Santa Paula Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which helps support local businesses.
In 1941, the United States Army forced the Santa Paula community to evacuate when it was discovered that their airfield would be used by Japan for bombing exercises. The American military built a temporary airfield on their property and named it Camp MacArthur after General George Custer. In 1949, the United States Air Force took over responsibility for Camp MacArthur and turned it into Santa Paula AFB. At first, the USAF used Camp MacArthur as a training ground for pilots and air controllers; however, soon enough they began deploying fighter jets to maintain operations at nearby Edwards AFB.
Since its inception as Santa Paula AFB, the USAF has been responsible for many significant events in our community. One such event was when they deployed helicopters to help fight wildfires in Ventura County in 1994. Another highlight occurred when theyDeployed troops during Operation Desert Storm in 1991-1992.
Today, there are more than 14000 service members stationed at Santa Paula AFB; this number includes both active duty and reserve components of the U S Military Forces.
Approximately two thirds of all aircraft operated out ofSanta Paula AFB come from Edwards AFB (which is located less than five miles away). This provides California with a major presence whenever something big happens in Nevada or Arizona.

Santa Paula is a city in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 26,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Santa Paula is located on Ventura Boulevard just east of Interstate 5 and south of I-805. The first European to arrive in Santa Paula was José Gabriel Orozco in 1824. In 1852, Don Antonio García founded a mission called Nuestra Señora de la Concepción de los Angeles (Our Lady of the Angels). The missions were abandoned by 1854 because of competition from Rancho San Vicente (now City of Ventura) which had been acquired by General Mariano Rivera from Mexican President Agustín Manuel López Jiménez. In 1856, Chico Alto discovered oil reserves in Rancho San Vicente and began production; this led to increased development around Santa Paula and new towns such as Simi Valley, Playa del Rey and Port Hueneme sprang up around it. The railroad arrived in 1886 and contributed to rapid growth with people coming to work in the factories and mines downtown or commuting daily to jobs outside the city limits. As more people moved into town, crime rates soared due to overcrowding and lack of police protection; however, some officials responded by creating programs such as "La Virgen" (the Virgin), which helped reduce crime rates through tourism marketing during prohibition era. Since then there have been several major redevelopment projects including the opening of Pico Rivera High School in 1992 which replaced an aging school system; followed by construction of two universities—USC Polytechnic School District Campus from 1998-2002 and Santa Clara University's Jack London Park Campus from 2006-2010—both resulting in new job creation for locals as well as tourists visiting parts nearby for swimming or skiing while living close enough not only for shopping but also easy access to all that action without havingTo leave town altogether.
