The city was named for Saint Pablo, a patron saint of Spain who is also venerated in Latin America. The first post office in San Pablo opened on October 15, 1851. In 1856, the town became an incorporated city with a population of around 10,000 people.San Pablo continued to grow and become one of the most populous cities in California during the 20th century. Today, San Pablo is considered an important cultural and commercial center for Northern California. In 1848, the Mexican government awarded Rancho San Pablo to Juan Bautista Alvarado. The ranch was located in present-day San Pablo and included land that extends to the north of the city limits. The Alvarados ran the ranch for many years until it came into ownership of a group of Americans led by Jameson Richardson in 1875. In 1898, following Mexican independence from Spain, San Pablo became part of California as part of its newly created statehood. At this time, Richardsons sold most of the ranch to General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna who donated it to the University of California at Berkeley. In 1906, during World War I, Berkeley acquired additional land around San Pablo and developed it into what is now known as UC Berkeley territory.
