The history of the San Leandro Gun Museum began with a donation from Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Kittle in 1922. At that time, the gun museum was located on a small tract of land northeast of town near Bancroft Park. The first collection of firearms was assembled and displayable in this small space. In 1934, the current location was purchased by the city of San Leandro and became part of City Hall Annex #2. In 1945, when City Hall Annex #1 burned down, the then Mayor Joram Vail decided to donate all remaining weapons from City Hall Annex #2 to the San Leandro Gun Museum as well as any firearms donated by other municipalities within our city limits since 1853! This collection now totals over 200 guns!
San Leandro is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 66,597 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay and south of downtown San Francisco. The first European to visit what is now San Leandro consisted of five Spanish priests and their hidalgos on September 10, 1776. They named it "Nuestra Señora de las Nieves" (Our Lady of the Nails). A mission was built there in 1821 by Father José Altamontan and padre Miguel DeHiggins. In 1851, the name was changed to San Pablo because510 acres (2 km²) of land grant were given to them by Pedro Nieto In 1906, during World War I as part of the so-called All-America Division under General Pershing's command, many Americans from Northern California enlisted in the Marines based here including future Mayor Dianne Feinstein. After war ended they returned home but keep an American attachment until their native place could be provided with permanent police service On October 15th 1850 a group led by Captain James Larkin sailed up North Point on Whitcomb's Coast Survey vessel Beagle leaving supplies for Mission Dolores at Point Reyes Station . On November 25th 1850 they sighted land which they called Isla de la Bolsa (Island of Scarf) after Lieutenant Commander George Vancouver who had charted it while exploring Vancouver Island and its surrounding waters in 1792/93 when he discovered Terra Nova Peninsula and Juan de Fuca Strait . From December 12th 1850 through January 4th 1851 Lt Col John D'Este explored Mount Shasta from Isla de la Bolsa landing party departing December 11th 509 men under Capt William Richardson overland following Raccoon River northeast into Trinity Valley about 20 miles below Red Bluff ........... By early February 1851 Lt Col John D'Este had reached Mount Shasta having traveled more than 100 miles along its slopes The party retreated due to snowdrifts over 5000 feet high found near summit Captain James Larkin’s ship Beagle became stranded off shore on November 25 1850 after running aground on shoal ice while sailing eastward around Cape Horn The only people ashore were three sailors−Larkin himself+++George Vancouver RN who commanded HMS Discovery that day+Lieutenant Commander Abraham Van Horne USNR commanding USS Dolphin assisted by two British seamen HMS Bristol Channel and HMS Sandwich Islands outfitting for exploration .... San Leandro has been inhabited for thousands of years and its history can be found throughout its current form as a small town on the west side of San Francisco Bay. The first European to visit San Leandro was Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portolà in 1769. In 1821, American Commodore John Cranch discovered and named Portola Strait after him. The future City of San Francisco was founded on October 29,1849 by Father Junípero Serra and his Franciscan followers as part of an attempt to create a new settlement near what is now Alameda County. On December 12, 1851, despite being refused entry by Governor Manuel Miranda due to its lack of land grant)the Mission Santa Clara de Asís (Church of Our Lady of Fatima)was erected on land granted by Serra with support from governor Alvarado y Salinas. By 1860, there were over 100 buildings in San Leandro with a population of 552 people! The growth continued through various waves of immigration during the 19th century including Italians (mainly from Naples), Chinese immigrants who worked on shipyards, Japanese Americans who worked at their plants or construction sites during World War II, and American Midgets who began working at General Motors Assembly Plants during the early 1950s. However it wasn’t until after World War II that San Leandro truly experienced significant growth with several large-scale projects such as Livermore National Laboratory ( 1951 ), West Coast Ammunition Plant ( 1958 ), Lockheed Aircraft Corporation’sOriginal North Pole Station Facility (1962), IBM’s new Central Research Lab(1984)), and Mayor Donny Deutsch’ proposal to build a freeway through downtown which became Proposition Q ( 1985 ). The 1990s have seen some major changes with crime rates slowly leveling off while job opportunities have increased notably within tech companies since they moved offshore following the dot-com bubble burst in 2001 but then experiencing rapid growth again starting around 2011 when many start ups shifted their operations out east into Silicon Valley due to low cost real estate prices there However even this has begun to reverse recent trends with homicides increasing again
The city of San Leandro was founded on April 12, 1787 by Manuel Nieto and his wife, Mariana de Jesus. The City of San Leandro was first part of the Rancho San Pablo grant which was given to José Joaquín Cámpora in 1824. In 1851, the town passed from Spanish hands to American hands when it became a part of the United States following Mexico's defeat in the Mexican-American War. A year later, on December 4, 1852, President James K. Polk ordered that all grants hereafter be granted without conditions and without reference to wealth or population; this created an uproar among Californians as it effectively destroyed most of their land holdings. The city slowly grew throughout its early years due to its location between two major military installations and its access to central California water supplies. In 1886, San Leandro annexed what is now downtown Hayward County. The annexation increased business opportunities for San Leandro while decreasing competition from neighboring cities such as Oakland and Berkeley. By 1920, San Leandro had reached its current size with a population of over 100,000 people and an economy worth $1 billion per year.
