The San Anselmo Army Depot was a large, open-air ammunition depot located in San Anselmo, California. It was active from 1897 until it closed in 1971. The depot served as the main storage and distribution center for artillery ammunition in the area. The first military Ammunition Depot on San Anselmo Peninsula was built by American forces during World War I. TheAPD was closed after the war, but reopened in 1927 as part of an effort to supply munitions to the California National Guard. In 1941, the USAAF moved its ammunition depot from Point Mugu Naval Air Station to San Anselmos Army Depot when that facility became available. From 1942 until 1945, the army used the AMD for storage of aircraft gasoline and oil ballots. In 1951, AMD became a heavy weapons armament depot when it merged with United States Arsenal Company (USSAC) to form United States Arms Corporation (USARC). USARC remained inactive through most of the 1970s before being sold to Californians Defense Industries Incorporated in 1979 and renamed California Arms Industries Incorporation (CAI). CAI converted AMD into an open-air gunnery range in 1984 and continued operations there until 1991. In 1992, CAI donated all of its assets to local government for use as a community resource center known today as The Armory at San Anselmo Village Center. Since 1994, The Armory has been operated by Volunteers of America as a museum focused on history and culture related to both military disarmament efforts throughout California during World War II as well as civilian disarmament efforts during peacetime since then.

The San Anselmo Legion of Honor is proud to present its first-ever military deployment gift history. On Dec. 7, 1941, the regiment mobilized for World War II and deployed to the Pacific theater. In 1945, the unit returned home and disbanded. However, in 1951, it reactivated as an infantry regiment and deployed again to the Pacific theater during the Korean War. San Anselmo is a city in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 38,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco–Oakland–Hayward Combined Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now San Anselmo were Spanish missionaries on February 17, 1776. As early as 1824, there was discussion about creating a town site here due to its strategic location between Sausalito and Tiburon. After years of planning and consultation by various groups led by prominent citizens such as Commodore John Doolittle and Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter, on January 8, 1851 the town's charter was granted to James Pillsbury with 1 square mile (0.6 km2) of land comprising present-day San Anselmo Township and all of Tiburon Creek watersheds north thereof. On July 15, 1857 the townships were combined into a single civil parish named after Saint Jerome which grew rapidly because of agricultural production in that area near Half Moon Bay and Petaluma Rivers. In 1872 an act took effect providing for election of school directors within each township; this became necessary because property values had skyrocketed since incorporation without public election or review. Voters in 1906 approved breaking off neighboring unincorporated communities into separate School Districts so that they could still be served by one large local governing body but when voters elected trustees for these new districts no change occurred until 1933 when voters passed an ordinance setting up two school boards with staggered terms so that both could serve concurrently for three years before being replaced by a new board members who would haveserved four year terms instead of three like prior elections allowed under state law). In 1916 voters approved boundaries which created District 5 (Sausalito), District 6 (Pleasanton), District 7A (Half Moon Bay), District 8B (Petaluma) andDistrict 9A (Fremont). The last two districts have since been abolished - District 10A has been merged with District 11A from Sausalito to form a single Citywide School district - whileDistrict 12 has been split between School Districts 14 & 15 from Half Moon Bay to form a second single Citywide School district called Rancho Cordova Unified School DISTRICT

In 1795, Captain George Vancouver sailed from British Columbia with the HMS Discovery, looking for a new land to explore. He and his crew were the first Europeans to set foot on what is now California. After sailing for many weeks, they sighted San Anselmo Island in the mouth of the San Andreas River. From this point on their Voyage of Discovery was filled with tales of lions and bears, Native Americans and Spanish explorers. Captain Vancouver named San Anselmo "Island of Hope" because he thought it would be a place where sailors could find relief from sea-sickness or other diseases. The island had an abundance of fresh water as well as trees that grew large enough to provide shade and food for animals. On July 12, 1795, Vancouver landed his men at San Anselmano Island; they built small huts in which they continued their exploration until they returned home two months later with supplies and news that there was no land further north than Catalina Island. The discovery of oil reserves in California led to increased traffic through the port of San Francisco during World War II; therefore, much damage was done to ancient buildings on Alcatraz Island between 1941-1945 when Japanese military personnel used it as an airfield during World War II. In recent years, restoration work has been completed on some of these structures including part of the original 1825 mission church which is still in use today as a parish center. San Anselmo continues to play an important role in Californian history: its economy depends upon tourism and its location makes it a popular tourist destination both domestically and abroad.
