The first coffee beans were grown in Riverside County by José Andrés Blanco in 1859. After World War II, Riverside became an iconic center for roasting and exporting coffee. In the 1970s, facilities were built in La Jolla and Escondido to roast more beans for export. Today, artisan coffee production remains a significant part of Riverside’s economy. The earliest evidence of Coffee Roasting activity within this area can be found at the old San Diego Mission complex located on present day Union Boulevard between Cahuenga Avenue and Botanic Drive (now University Boulevard). Spanish missions were established in what is now Riverside County in 1776 AD. By 1823, two Mexican American farmers named Manuel Chavez and Antonio Rodriguez had opened a small café called Los Pinos de Santa Clara near where US 101 meets Interstate 5 today (Chavez Road). It was here that Garcia bought some of the first beans roasted by Antonio Rodriguez on November 6th, 1824 – making him one of the earliest importers of Colombian coffee into North America! In 1863-4 Don José Altamira imported about 125 lb/hr sacks or 3 tons of fresh green coffee from Asunción, Paraguay as he was Trade representative for Brazil at that time! He brought with him his own equipment including a water bath which he used to roast his own beans! He also purchased African slaves who helped to roast those mountains of coffees that we know today as Roberto Clemente Street & Parkway @ Fruitvale Ave., San Francisco Bay Area

Riverside, California is a city in Riverside County, California. The population was 66,411 at the 2010 census. It is located on the San Gabriel River and has been home to many settlements over the years. One of the first towns in what is now Riverside County was called Arroyo Grande by Spanish settlers in 1795. The name may be derived from Arijuena Creek which flowed through the town. In 1871, when Angeles National Forest was created, part of it were included in Riverside and it became an incorporated municipality with a population of about 56 people on March 14, 1907.
