It was founded in 1849 by Father Gabriel Jesus Alvarado and was named for a nearby hill, Pinole Hill. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in what is now Pinole was José Francisco de la Peña y Ulloa, who arrived from Mexico on December 21, 1847. In 1850, Mexican soldiers were stationed at the base of Mount Shasta to monitor gold mining operations near Toquima Lake; one night they heard shots fired and discovered Spanish settlers had taken up residence there. A group of Mexicans led by José Antonio Carranza moved into Pinole after discovering that Shasta Mountain lay empty and its potential mines were undiscovered (Carranza had earlier discovered Donner Pass). In 1851, Juan Bautista de Anza led an army across the Great American Desert to explore California; heading toward San Francisco Bay he turned south instead and entered southeastern California through what is now Pinole. On February 29th, 1852 General Mariano Vallejo received news that $20 million worth of gold had been found in Sierra Nevada foothills east of San Francisco; this made pinole one of the most important settlements along his route to America. The following year saw another Gold Rush as prospectors flooded into eastern California looking for new fields; many people immigrated to pinole during this time including Angelina Grimaldi (the woman who would later become known as Mrs John F Kennedy).
