In 1824, General Alvarado named this area Rancho Laguna Seca for Nicholas Larkin, one of his subordinates. Rancho Laguna Seca was part of Colonel John C. Fremont's Rancho Adobe land grant which he acquired from José Joaquín de Soto on November 7, 1825. In 1852, local businessman George Hearn donated 640 acres (240 hectares) to the town for its development as a agricultural center with warehouses and other commercial properties. At that time there were only about 20 people living in Pinole and most workers were farmers or their families who helped out with crops and ranching operations. During World War II, Pinole became an important military airfield because it was used to provide landing rights for American bombers flying over the Bay Area during early 1942 raids against Japan.
