Name: Parlier, California Location: Near Fresno, California Population: 85,000 as of 2010 Climate: Mediterranean climate with hot summers and cool winters. Parlier is located in the San Joaquin Valley on the east bank of the San Joaquin River. The valley is widest near Bakersfield and narrowest in the north at Madera. North of town are rolling hills covered with oak and walnut trees; to the southeast is a broad plain known as Grantown-Grantville. The valleys were formed by slow erosion of mountains that stands today between Madera and Bakersfield. The first people to live here were Native Americans who hunted elk, deer,and bear in these woods before they built settlements around 1000 BC. They left behind pottery shards from their culture which have been found throughout this area. The first Europeans to come here were Spanish fur traders who arrived in 1769 and named it after José de Parlier, an intendant for Mexico City. After Spain lost its colonies in America during the Mexican Revolution (1810-1821), this area became part of United States under Mexico until 1848 when it became part of California under US rule. In 1900 there were only 10 families living here; by 1910 there was a population of 85,000 people living hereabouts including 40% Hispanics/Latino residents . Growth has been slow due to lack of jobs opportunities outside ranching or farming while prices for goods have risen faster than wages making Parlier one of the most expensive places to live in California . Parlier is a small town in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, about an hour and a half from Sacramento. The town was founded in 1851 by wagoner Philander Parlier and his wife Anna. The Parliesers named their settlement after their son, who had died in early 1850 while exploring the area. The town's first post office opened in 1853. It closed in 1857. The first store in Parlier was built on Main Street. In 1862, the community hired J.M. Snider as its first schoolteacher. By 1865, there were six stores and one blacksmith shop in Parlier. In 1886, parlormaid Virginia Woolf moved to Parlier from nearby Auburn with her daughter Rosamund and married John Everett Woolf there; they renamed the town Woolfer City after themselves. In 1911, local farmers started growing hay for export to California's other agricultural communities; this led to growth for the town although it did not have a market until 1928 when it became part of Sacramento County through an act of Congress known as "The extension Act". During World War II, local farmers turned production into munitions manufacturing; as such,Parlier experienced rapid growth during that time period with many new businesses opening up including two banks within ten years of each other (1937-1945). As various industries closed down or changed hands over time (cement / paper industry → automotive Manufacturing → telecommunications),parler experienced significant decline beginning around 1990 but has since begun to rebound somewhat thanks to investments by successive mayors which have seen increased development along main streets such as US Highway 395 TodayParlier is still an agricultural center with some light industrial activity but much of its historic fabric remains intact Along Main Street where you can find several erected Revival Style architecture dating back to pre-World War II days
