In 1892, Oxnard was founded as a small agricultural town by Italian immigrants. The town's name is derived from the Latin word "oculus," meaning "eye." It was originally a fishing village on the Oxnard River. The first coffee shop inOxnard opened in 1895. In 1907, the founders of Starbucks moved to Oxnard and started a small grocery store called 'The Bean Hole.' In 1970, Starbucks bought out its predecessor's share of the local roaster, Green beans Coffee & Tea Company. Two years later, they merged with another local roaster, Snapple Group USA-owned Gourmet Coffee Trading Company (GCTC). This merger made GCTC one of the largest coffee companies in North America. As American coffee became more popular throughout the late 19th century and early 20th century, Oxnard began to experience growth and development. In 1912, Oxnard established its own high school- which still occupies an iconic building on First Street today- and soon began to produce its own coffee beans for sale to other businesses and consumers. By 1933, when Oxnard entered into city government for the first time ever under Mayor Jens Jensen (D), it had become one of Southern California's most politically active communities with a strong presence in both state and national politics. During World War II, much like many other towns across America during that time period, Oxnard turned to agriculture as its primary source of revenue due to scarce wartime resources. It is the largest city in Ventura County by land area and the third-largest city in Ventura County by population. The copper mining industry and other industries have left Oxnard with a strong economy that has been based on services and light manufacturing since the early 21st century. The first humans to live near what is now Oxnard were nomadic hunter-gatherers who traveled along present day Route 66 fromOntario to Red Bluff during the late Pleistocene epoch. A smallpox pandemic which struck North America about 1815 killed most of these people, leaving their descendants scattered among various Native American groups including Mono and Chumash Indians living on or near today's Channel Islands, Santa Barbara Peninsula and southern Yolo County. The first European settlers were two brothers named George Washington Borland (1805–1873) who purchased land east of Oxnard from Juan Bautista de Anza y Valdez for $1,000 on July 12, 1826. They erected theirLog House at an existing Indian trail intersection just north of present day Highway 101 south of Carpinteria on Borland Ranch which they named "Rancho San Agustin" after Don José Antonio Calvo y Espinosa y Losada who had acquired it soon before them through purchase from Mission San José de los Olivos – part of RanchoSanta Anita – following Mexican War hostilities between United States forces under General Winfield Scott over Mexico’s access to San Francisco Bay. Of note are nearby Point Conception National Monument - home to one-fourth of all sandstone boulders in California - as well as Dos Palmas State Beach popular for swimming and fishing; both are located within easy driving distance from Oxnard city limits but not within its boundaries.Today's town began forming around this initial group when farmers began arrives in search of grazing lands for their livestock during the Gold Rush era (1848–49).
