The Ontario, California Army Reserve was activated on November 16, 1907. The first unit to be deployed was the 2nd Battalion of the 38th Regiment. It served in the Mexican-American War and World War I with distinction. In 1922, the battalion was redesignated as the 4th Battalion of the 38th Regiment and again served in World War II. Withdrawn from active duty in 1946, it became a part of California's Regular Army and continues to serve today as an honor guard for state capitols.

After returning home the battalion was stationed at Donora Creek before being reassigned to Happy Valley Barracks near Redlands May 14th – June 6th, 1849 where they remained until their discharge from military service in August 1850.
