Oceanside is a city in San Diego County, California. It occupies the eastern edge of the small town of Oceanside and is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the north, Stone Canyon National Park to the east, and Carlsbad Caverns National Park to the south. The population was 382,812 as of 2010. The first Europeans to explore this area were Spanish traders in 1602. They named it "Isla de la Garza" after one of their witnesses who saw a white seal on shore near present-day Oceanside. The Japanese explorer Isamu Gotō explored and charted this coast in 1821 while on his way from Japan back home. In 1892, when Railroad Company president James Meehan built a station at La Jolla Cove for use by his railroad contractor friends he took care not to name it "Oceanside". In honor of Meehan's kindness and generosity many people still refer to Oceanside as "La Jolla Cove". On January 1, 1893 KFWB AM began broadcasting from office buildings in downtown La Jolla with studios on Second Street between First Avenue and Third Street (now US 101). This station became known as "KFWD" or "Oldies FM". KFWD continued its operation until December 15th 1966 when all local radio stations went off analog power due to FCC regulations that required all commercial stations licensee must go digital by December 15th 2006. Oceanside is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 63,569 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of San Diego County and part of the larger region that includes Imperial Beach, La Jolla, and Scripps Ranch. The City of Oceanside was founded on November 1st 1892 by citizens of San Diego who saw an opportunity to build a town on the then-uninhabitable island in the Pacific Ocean off Point Loma. Oceanside's first store opened its doors in 1893. In 1902, Oceanside became one of only two towns in California to be granted their own charter as a city. In 1912, it annexed portions of neighbouring La Jolla. Today, Oceanside remains one of Southern California's most vibrant cities with a rich history dating back to 1892 when its citizens saw an opportunity to build a thriving community on an uninhabited island in the Pacific Ocean off Point Loma – something which they were able to do because they had charters from both San Diego and Los Angeles counties!
In 1821, Spanish soldiers under the command of General Francisco Xavier de Monterey attacked and captured Mission San Diego, a small mission on an uninhabited island in what is now the city of Oceanside. The attack resulted in the loss of many lives, including Monterey himself. The mission was later secularized and became a school for native children. In 1846, California gold seekers discovered new land to the north and west of Oceanside and began developing it as Rancho Pacifico. Some people from Oceanside settled on the rancho, while others moved into nearby towns such as Carlsbad and Escondido. In 1886, developers built a cotton gin on the site of today's Old Town Oceanside. The town grew quickly with its population reaching 6,000 by 1907. By 1915, most residents had left for other parts of California or Mexico because of World War I. During World War II, the Navy used the oceanfront property to build ships landing at Laguna Beach for troops training during Operation Neptune's Spear. The beach was closed to traffic until 1951 when it reopened to allow visitors to see military vessels in action
