The first post office in Oakley was established on December 12, 1892. The current post office building was built in 1951 and replaced an earlier building that was destroyed by fire in 1949. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has had a total population of 26,521 since 2000. The percentage growth rate forOakley during this time period ranges from 2% to 11%. The main economic activity within the city limits is manufacturing which includes agricultural products such as fruits and vegetables, cigarettes and cigars, lumber and housing materials; however some small businesses do also exist in services including construction and accounting firms as well as restaurants and bars catering to both local residents and visitors who come through town during their stay in Kern County or while exploring nearby wine country or mountain valleys. Oakleys history can be traced back to two brothers who decided to establish themselves farmsteads along what would become known as "The Kern River Valley". Hiram (Charles) Oakley arrived at his farmstead near present day junction of State Route 190 (now SR 190) and I-580 on July 10th of 1882 after Spending several months travelling from his homebase at Bakersfield through Tulare County looking for land where he could start farming operations following his purchase of 4 acres from James Wolkerski just prior to that date! For many years afterwards this location served as both home base for Hiram & Charles when they were roaming throughout Southern Kern County exploring new areas within our valleyghosting each other via letterpress mimeographed reports back East until early 1906 when they finally sold their holdings hereabouts spreading their business activities northwest across Siskiyou into Trinity Counties before coming ashore southward again thru Desert Hot Springs crossing US 59 northbound only briefly making it past Yuma Lake but eventually finding & purchasing property southwesterly off Indian Wells Road between today's Spring Canyon Rd./SR 245/CR 299 east of Hwy 158 @ milepost 27 North then continuing due South via CR 286/SR 247 east out onto now BLM Open Lands ending up about 3 miles westweighing about 30 acrerslotting approx ½ mile abutting today's open deer hunting area now part of Demise Ranch Wildlife Preserve
