Oakdale is a small town in the Central Valley of California, about 30 miles northeast of Sacramento. It was founded by William D. Jarvis in 1868 as a post office and cattle ranch. In 1880, Jarvis opened the first coffee shop in the United States in what is now Downtown Oakdale. The business thrived until World War I when it closed its doors for lack of customers. In 1922, Jarvis reopened his business as an independently owned and operated grocery store and cafe which continued to operate until 1953 when it merged with another grocery store, becoming the first company to combine the two businesses into one entity known as The Grapes of Wrath Grocery Store. The merger was done to increase sales opportunities for both stores and improve customer service due to increased competition from other grocers in the area. The Grapes of Wrath Grocery Store continued to serve customers until 1977 when it closed its doors after more than 50 years of operation. During its time at this location, The Grapes of Wrath Grocery Store sold over 2 million pounds of coffeebeans!

Oakdale is a small town in California's Central Valley. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. The first coffee beans were roasted on December 7, 1859, by José A. Reparaz in his shop on High Street. Coffee was sold fresh from the roasting and processing plants located near downtown Fresno and outside of town on foot or horseback. In 1876, Augustus Kelley started a grocery store in what is now downtown Oakdale with one room and fifty-six barrels of coffee beans per week. In 1916, Wm Henson founded the Whetstone Sawmill which processed lumber for local homes and businesses until it closed in 1984. In 1922, Rufus Davenport opened an ice cream business called "Davenport's cones". In 1935 Don Kapp bought the Davenport place and turned it into a cafe that served breakfast, lunch and dinner until he died in 1965; it became known as "Kapp's Place". From 1924 to 1928 Harry Weichsel served as Mayor of Oakdale with his wife Alma Weichsel until she died from tuberculosis in 1951; he then succeeded her as Mayor. In 1977–1978 John Fenton ran for Mayor but lost to Dianne Feinstein when the vote count was recounted due to irregularities caused by faulty voting machines used during the election campaign (Fenton had also run for Governor earlier that year). In 1978 Starbucks opened its first branch in Oakdale when Gene Green wanted to open up a second location adjacent to his original store at 5th & Elm Streets east of Fresno City Hall which broke ground on October 9th 1978 and reopened on November 15th 1980 after being closed for over three years due to fire damage suffered during construction

Garfield, as a citrus grower's colony on the east bank of the Sacramento River. In 1915, Oakdale became part of the newly formed city of Sacramento. The population was 5,600 in 1950 and 9,000 by 2000. The history of Oakdale begins with John C. Fremont who arrived in 1887 from Illinois to start a new life on the east bank of the Sacramento River near present-day Sacramento City. His wife Sarah J. Garfield helped him establish himself and they soon started growing oranges for shipment to markets around the world. The couple had six children and continue to thrive into their nineties today; unfortunately Sarah passed away in 2006 at 96 years old but her son John continues to lead Oakdale’s civic community and run its marketing department until 2019 when he will be 91 years old! In 1915, after more than 100 years of agriculture at Oakdale, farmland on both sides of the river were acquired for development into what would become Sacramento County seat cities: West Sacramento (1915), EastSacramento (1920), Rialto (1925), Citrus Heights (1927), and most recently Dana Point (2000). Today’s downtown area includes an impressive mix of brick buildings dating back to World War II including one that is still used as a polling place; Elmira Building #1 which housed both halves of the California State Capitol from 1913-1967; two Republican Party summer headquarters during Ronald Reagan’s presidency; various government ministries including Lincoln Financial Field where local high school football games are played each fall; and four churches – First United Methodist Church (#1/5 building) Comprehensive Baptist Church (#2Building) Lutheran Church (#3Church) Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (@Southwestern Baptists University).

Over time, these farms became larger and began to sell their coffee through local shops. In the 1940s, an Italian entrepreneur named Antonio Frunzi started selling his roasted beans direct to consumers. This first incarnation of artisan coffee was much weaker than what we are now used to, but it was a start. The popularity of this style of coffee ledFrunzi to open his own roastery in 1963 and begin manufacturing his own beans. From here on out, all of Frunzi's roasted beans would be labelled as "artisan." The 1990s were a time when artisan coffee began to bloom in popularity again. In order for this new trend to take off, some very talented individuals hadTo lead the way: David Dunn from Columbian Coffee Roasters was one such figurehead; he helped create the modern roast profile for artisan coffees and pushed for more sustainable practices throughout his company. As word spread about how great artisan coffees were, other businesses followed suit and soon there were boutique roasters plying their trade within the craft brewing industry. It wasn't until recent times that widespread interest in artisan Coffee has waned – but it never really stopped growing!
