The Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) permanently deployed U.S. Navy Anti-Submarine Warfare Squadron 8 (ASW-8) to Murrieta, California in February 1945 as part of the United States military's Operation Neptune's Spear, which was aimed at stopping German submarines from sinking American shipping off the coast of Normandy. The squadron was activated on 28 January 1945 at NAS Pensacola, Florida and its first commanding officer was Lt. Cdr. John W. Durden. ASW-8 patrolled the California coastline for two months before their deployment to Murrieta; during that time they operated out of USS Constitution (CV-4). Murrieta, California is located in the southern San Gabriel Valley of Southern California. The population was reported to be 138,391 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Murrieta were Spanish missionaries in 1769 and they named it Encinal de las Flores (Encinal of Flowers). The town was founded in 1853 by Mexicans who had come overland from Mexico City. At that time there were only a few hundred people living hereabouts. In 1875, fur-trapping boats stopped at Encinal on their way up the Santa Monica River and some wealthy Californians decided to invest in this new industry which soon became very successful. They built roads, dams and other infrastructure so that these boats could bring more goods back downriver to market than ever before. Today, much of what made Encinal such an attractive place for developers has been lost in time but some interesting aspects still remain including: a small park with beautiful flower gardens; a replica of Mission San Gabriel Arcangela; a rich history as one of many businesses started by Hollywood stars during its heyday including Marilyn Monroe and Tom Cruise; two excellent restaurants - La Casita Mexicana and El Rancho Grande - as well as several souvenir stores that sell Mexican objets d’art (ART) such as pottery, lamps and furniture. Murrieta was founded in 1849 by Captain Edward G. Murrieta and his wife, Eliza Jane. At the time, it was a small town of about 350 people. It became an agricultural center after California received its statehood in 1850. The town grew rapidly due to its proximity to San Francisco and its ability to produce crops such as wine and citrus fruit. In 1902, Murrieta incorporated as a city and began to expand its boundaries into what is now downtown. The city has since grown further westward, annexing parts of nearby unincorporated communities along the way.
