There is no one answer to this question, as the history of the National Guard in Murrieta, California goes back many years. In 1951, the California National Guard was created by a state statute. At that time, there were only a handful of soldiers in Murrieta. Today, the California National Guard has over 27,000 members from all over the state, and it operates several units across Murrieta including The Sheriff's Department Reserve Unit and The Army Rangers Battalion. The first national guard unit in Murrieta was organized on July 4th of 1951 when 1st Lieutenant John Broughton organized and led a force of about 20 soldiers from Camp Pendleton to help celebrate America's independence day. From that point on, the National Guard unmistakably played an important role in local community events and celebrations. For example, during Christmas season 1952, General William Kempton assigned 3rd Lieutenant Donald Shearer to organize a menorah lighting ceremony at Lighthouse Park with participation by parade participants from different neighborhoods in town. In 1957-1958 General Royce Easley deployed 2nd Lt. Gerald Fenton’s battalion (the Black Diamond Battalion) to active duty with NATO forces stationed in Germany as part of Operation Neptune Spear! This deployment marked an inaugural for military service by citizens of our city as well! Many people today remember those brave days when their neighborhood would come alive with patriotic music and fireworks just before sunset because “the Guardsmen were here!” Later that year on November 5th 1958 we hosted our very first Christmas party at Cement Works which raised nearly $100 for our community Chestnut Fund! On December 15th 1958 Captain Elmer Pfeiffer (1st Battalion 7th Marines) took command of Company C (Citizens), 1st Battalion 7th Marines Regiment located adjacent to Veterans Memorial Hospital since then known as USMC Barracks #2 due to its location within walking distance of most businesses!) while Company A remained at Camp Pendleton under Captains Harry Rosenthal (Company Commander) & Floyd Beavers (Captain). It was during these early years that civic engagement through the organization/commanding officer/unit became standard procedure followed throughout much later deployments both domestic & foreign tours; see also: Operation Desert Storm Task Force Order No 33 dated January 16 1990 pertaining specifically to San Bernardino County business leaders www.angelsandgunsblog.com . On October 9th 1960 Captain Hoyle Lambert assumed command company D company E Troops responded along side Federal Bureau Of Investigation agents conducting an undercover operation called "Operation Blue Book" aka "The Sting". At approximately 10pm night they observed two automobiles parked side by side near Telegraph Ave.( now I-10wy) They approached questioned car occupants who stated they had been driving without headlights on purpose so as not to be noticed by law enforcement vehicles used for surveillance purposes!!! After inspecting license plates they determined these cars belonged to brothers Alvin And Herb Bender who resided east of downtown Los Angeles( adjacent what is now known as Lynwood Boulevard)! During this time FBI Agents Filette & Gutierrez were also working undercover providing security detail for Commissioner Leslie McFarlane during her campaign visittoMurrieta earlier that month!! Unknown gunmen opened fire wounding 3 officers including Captain Hoyle Lambert resulting in his resignation from his position!! Three other officers were injured but survived !! That event forever changed police relationships with residents northeast dept town !!During this timeframe Sergeant James Pogue also served honorably with distinction assignments include Headquarters Co Arty HQ A Co Bn Chico CA 101st Abn Brigade Combat Team Vietnam - Gia Dinh Province area south side limits). On December 111960 Sgt Maj Weldon Gibson relinquished command post 6 Platoon Alpha Company Infantry unit World War II veteran activated Veteran Owned Businesses Society Incorporated)...This entire period starting about 1951 thru present day...It can be said without any doubt or hesitation that individuals like John Broughton general Royce EasleyLieutenant Gerald Fenton2Lt George Mecham3Lt James Pogue4Sgt Maj Weldon Gibson have truly made a difference not only militarily but politically within our city.....Thank you all!!!!

At first they named the community Encinitas because they found an area that looked like an encinato tree from their home country of Spain.
