The first real development in what would become Monterey took place around this time. A store called La Casa Blanca opened up on Commercial Street in 1837 and soon became known for its good quality goods and delicious Californian cuisine. Other businesses followed such as a hotel and several mills that produced flour for local consumption or export to other parts of America. By 1840, there were over 100 residents living in what would become known as "the Town". One important event that occurred during this time was the founding of a Masonic Lodge at 8th and Harrison Streets by James Barnes in 1840 under pretense of helping promote British interests in California whileactually promoting American ones In 1850s two major events happened that would have far-reaching consequences for bothmonteregionaland nationalhistory: 1) American General Douglas MacArthur moved his headquarters from San Francisco to nearby Benicia; and 2) Commodore John Farragut's CSS Sacramento attacked Juan Bautista Cabrillo's shipwrecked treasure fleet off Cape Mendocino Island on December 7th off Point Reyes National Seashore without warning or provocation
