Modesto is a city located in the central part of California, on the banks of the Sacramento River. The name Modesto comes from Spanish and means "little mountain" or "farmstead near the mountain." As of 2010, Modesto had a population of over 194,000 people. The first European to visit this area was Gaspar de Portolà, who named it after his hometown of Modena in Italy. In 1824, Manuel Nieto (alias Don José) founded Rancho San Leandro at what is now the corner of Third and First Streets. From here he ran cattle and sheep ranching operations which developed into a major wine-growing region around Modesto. The new town formed in 1848 when two farmers combining their holdings agreed to sell their remaining land to John Sutter for $15 an acre. John Sutter built mills on the Sacramento River and shipped goods by boat upriver to Red Bluff before shipping them downriver again for retail sale at Stockton Landing on Lake Oroville (now east downtown). In 1853, Sutter sold majority interest in his business venture to James Hutton, who renamed it Hutton & Son vineyards. By 1863 there were eighteen vineyards with a production capacity totaling 420 acres (160 hectares). The early history of Modesto was also marked by important events that shaped its growth as one of California's most vibrant cities: The signing by President Abraham Lincoln on June 9th 1865 of the Morrill Act creating public land west of the Rocky Mountains; General George Armstrong Custer's battle against Sitting Bull at Battle Creek; and development along Highway 55 leading out from Modesto towards Northern Californias largest city – Sacramento – all within just thirty years or so following incorporation as a city!
