Merced, California is a city in Kern County, California. The population was 26,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kern County and one of its five municipalities. The city consists of two parts: the older downtown area and an inner-city district surrounding the University of Merced. The earliest known inhabitants of what is now Merced were Athsiocerotidae (“throwing stones”), who built villages near Mono Lake in 1853. In 1868, Spanish settlers named it San Andrés de los Costados after Saint Anthony of Padua. A group of Chinese immigrants founded Cahuilla Station in 1887 on land that now makes up part of downtown Merced. In 1906, Japanese American employees at Will Rogers World Headquarters relocated to MERCED during World War II as part of Operation Top secret/JAXA which aimed to encourage dislocation among enemy forces located within United States borders. MERCED was incorporated as a city on November 14, 1907 by ordinance from a vote by the eight corporate members composing the first City Council: Elisha Mott ( Trustee), James Fenton (Trustee) Harry Weybright ( Mayor), John Ives ( Collector), Franklin Riggs ( Constable). On December 4, 1907 Mayor Weybright dedicated City Hall which had been used as a private insane Asylum since 1839 when Dr prohibition closed that institution for all intents and purposes; at that time only about 50% being used for mental patients with most being sold off to others such as research institutions or prisons where they continued working until 1952 when state law changed allowing hospitals like Will Rogers to be used for mental health services only under license from state officials not doctors. As more people moved into town and began businesses there began to be more housing developments - including some still in use today such as City Hall Park - while also new parks and libraries were added such as Donnybrook Park just east of downtown and North America Center park across Broadway northwest of downtown where basketball games were held before NFL games could take place. Downtown business owners lobbied hard to get streetcars running through their neighborhoods so they could bring their customers closer insteadof having them drive out into Argonaut Valley which would take them past several factories right next door then walk back home again...thus creating what we know today as Central Avenue corridor which runs along three sides of Downtown Mercd

The site for Merced was chosen by Juan Bautista de Anza in 1776 as the location for what is now Fresno. It has been rumored that City Councilman Eric Garcetti may run against Villaraigosa in 2020 should he become interested in running for re-election instead of serving out his full term which expires on December 14th 2021.
The Spanish Presidio de Monterey sat atop Mission Peak east of present day downtown Merced between 1821 and 1836 while under Mexican rule until taken back by American General Santa Anna who built Fort Point across San Francisco Bay on top of Mission Peak Point #6 on October 25th 1837.Mission Peak Mormon missionaries arrived at Missions Concepción (present day Coachella) near today’s downtown San Bernardino on April 6st 1800
On March 30th 1853 a large party led by Father David Whitmer discovered gold along today’s edge of town just southwest of where US 101 skirtsby intersects old State Route 4104 about 10 miles NW or northwest from modern downtown < br /> They named their discovery “San Gabriel Hill” although they knew nothing about Collis Pritchard’s hitherto unrecorded Comanche village located some 12 miles SE just southward at what is now Antelope Valley northeast cornering San Bernardino National Forest. Father José Altamirano explored this area soon afterwards
Mormon missionaries traveled annually up and down Mtn Road bringing loadsavings back with them including silver coins & artifacts like spoons , bells etc…. Dates unknown but within a few years most likely1860 thru 1870″ so mission buildings were moved around quite a bit Upon becoming aware of white man presence various bandit activity ceased/ diminished
