Mcfarland is located in northwestern California, just east of the Mexican border. The community was founded in 1847 by Capt. Nathaniel P. McFarland and his family. It became a famous cattle ranching and citrus growing town after it was chosen as the site of a new post office in 1872. It reached its peak during World War II when more than 10,000 people lived here. But since then, the community has slowly declined due to economic difficulties and competition from larger towns nearby. In recent years, some residents have started to revive the town with plans to develop it into a small-town feel again.

The town of Mcfarland, California was founded in 1848 by John A. McClernand and his family. The town became a census-designated place in 1955. The population of the CDP was 24,546 at the 2010 census. Mcfarland is located about east of Sacramento and west of Fresno on the San Joaquin River. The river forms the eastern border of the town and its primary means of transportation is water taxi service from downtown to points on the river near where it empties into Lake Oroville. At one time, McFarland had a railroad depot but this ceased operations in 1975. Today, most goods brought into or exported from McFarland are transported by truck or horseback. In 1848, McClernand set out from Jacksonville, Florida for what would become California with his bride Julia Prentice Carleton (she would later marry James Shields). They arrived at Zabriskie Point on April 12th and started homesteading in present-day Red Bluff Township northeast of modern day Fresno County according to McClernand’s journal: “We foundered our way through steep bluffs covered with clumps of cedar and Douglas fir; we passed several rivers crossing them; but finally reached a level plain which led us to choice country and rich pastures; here we began building our cabin … Our first crop was wheat and it grew well – so well that I hired two men who worked for me during harvest time … In 1850 we added horses to our outfit; then came cows; now we have four families living together as tenants” (Journals, pgs 332-333). McFarland had a post office from December 3rd 1852 until May 1st 1865 when it was discontinued because there were no mail handlers available in that area at that time due to gold rush fever (Journals pgs 334-335). From October 15th 1860 until November 2nd 1861 McClernand served as Captain/Major United States Volunteers during the Mexican–American War under command of General Winfield Scott Hancock while stationed at Presidio Heights south of modern day Fresno (Census records). On November 5th 1861 he received orders ordering him home after General Scott’s victory over Mexico City thereby ending World War II hostilities between America & Mexico (Census records). After returning home he resumed farming operations before being appointed Sheriff for Kings County on January 10th 1863 serving until July 8th 1865 when he resigned due to ill health(Lincoln Herald Tribune pg 6 11 Dec 1863) He died suddenly at his farmstead southeast of Fresno on December 5th 1865 aged 53 years old leaving six children including Julia who married George Wetherbee in 1888 . His wife also inherited Rancho Encanto which includes parts surrounding present day Fresno(Lincoln Herald Tribune pg 7 17 Dec 1865)
On January 1, 1853, the first post office on Mcfarland was established. The town was named after J.D. McFarland, a contractor who built the old Los Angeles and San Bernardino Railroad.
