Today's Martinez is a vibrant community with rich cultural history dating back to its inception as a small settlement located within Alta Californias borders. One local landmark is the old Pacheco Mine Company Building which still stands today and serves as a museum dedicated to mining history in Martinez. The City of Martinez celebrates its namesake's birthday each year with an event called "Antonio Bandera Day". This includes various festivities such as parade, street fairs/festivals, bake sale/pumpkin sale etc., culminating with a chili cook-off at downtown Park Plaza downtown where local restaurants compete against each other in cooking demonstrations lasting several hours

In 1847, the United States Congress created the Martinez Rancho in present-day Martinez, California. The rancho was named for General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, who had led Mexican troops against U.S. forces at San Jacinto in 1846. In 1851, after a land sale and survey process that took place over many months, the US government acquired 2,200 acres of what is now Martinez from Mexico for $800 per acre. The land became part of Alta California following Mexican independence from Spain in 1853.
