Los Gatos was founded in 1851 by the brothers Isaac and George Gunn. Amalia was instrumental in founding the first school in Los Gatos; Maria helped establish a grocery store and bakery; Elisabeth served as treasurer and secretary at various local organizations. In 1865, they married John Cavenagh Grant; together they had two children: Julia (born January 9, 1867) and Grant Jr. (born October 16, 1870). In 1886–87, Los Gatos voters passed an ordinance creating Park District #2 to preserve idle land along South Main Street east of Center Street for future development as part of efforts to improve transportation access to central San Francisco Bay Area municipalities through new routes connectingLOS GATOS with SAN FRANCISCO via BART stations south of downtown LAX Airport
