In 1949, Charles Banis sold his company to Nestle SA for $2 billion. Today, Los Banos remains an important center for coffee production and consumption with many cafes and restaurants specializing in its famed delicacies.
In the year 1849, a group of California pioneers known as the "Los Banos" set out from San Francisco on horseback to cross the Mojave Desert. They were looking for a new home and hoped to find gold in this vast wasteland. When they arrived in what is now Los Banos, they found that their hopes were realized. The town was founded by Manuel Antonio Rivera and his brother Santiago, who had come across some gold nuggets while exploring nearby hills. TheRivera brothers soon started building a cabin and trading with the local Indians. The town quickly developed into a thriving community and began growing crops, livestock, and merchandise. In later years, the river running through town became so polluted that many people decided to move away. However, the spirit of Los Banos will always be remembered because it was here that first contact was made with Europeans!

Los Banos is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salinas–San Joaquin Valley Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live here were the Tongva people who called this area "Banaco" meaning "place of fish." The Tongva had a village on the east side of the San Joaquin River about 10 miles (16 km) north of present-day Los Banos. They also had villages nearpresent-day Fresno and Bakersfield. The Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded by Father Junípero Serra in 1797 and arrived in 1821. The Mission has been used for many purposes including a jail, school, post office, and hospital. On November 15, 1858, during Mexican–American War hostilities began between American forces and Mexico over claims to Rancho Santa Clara y la Calavera (now part of Agoura Hills), four men led by Captain John Cohan entered Los Banos with sixty rifles to search for arms caches being built by Mexican troops under General Antonio López de Santa Anna on hills south of town. They discovered nine cannonballs cached among some brushwood along the riverbank and decided not to investigate because they were not expecting violence but because they wanted assurances that their request would be honored if war broke out between America and Mexico In 1859 Adolph Sutro arrived from Stockton with his family as one of several settlers recruited by Colonel James Fenton to help build an adobe ranch at what is now Mesa Verde National Park southeast of town . In 1860 he leased land from Juan Chávez for $2 per acre . On October 6, 1861 , after becoming owner of Rancho Los Banos from Chávez He started building a tannery which became known as “Hacienda Sutro” today’s Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum). On February 11th 1862 Captain Cohan led another party into town after finding more cannonball caches; he reported finding eleven cannons but no ammunition so no action was taken against Chávez’s tannery until December 1863 when Pico Rivera attacked Las Vegas while American forces were deployed there under Lieutenant colonel Kearny

In the early years, Los Banos had to do most of its business through trade with nearby San Francisco. However, over time, the town began to develop into an agricultural center.
