Los Alamitos (L.A.) is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States, and the seat of Los Alamitos National Laboratory. The population was 79,871 at the 2010 census. It is located about 22 miles (35 km) east-northeast of downtown Los Angeles and about 34 miles (51 km) south of downtown San Bernardino. The name "Los Alamitos" comes from the Spanish words "los alamuerzos," meaning "the lizards." In 1868, General George Armstrong Custer and his regiment were garrisoned here for three months while their brigade restocked after their victory at Gettysburg. After Custer's death, his unit's colors were flown from this fort to Fort Myer in Virginia before finally being sent back to Los Angeles. In 1941, during World War II, plutonium production began at Los Alamitos National Laboratory as part of Project Peculiar. The plant produced weapons-usable plutonium until it was shut down by order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt on June 20th, 1945 just days before Japan's surrender. After the war ended in 1945, both laboratories were closed respectively due to budget cuts that had started earlier that year within the Department of Energy but went into full swing when Truman took office in 1951 because he wanted to end America's involvement in Korea and make way for solar energy development priority. However these closures did not stop scientists from working on new technologies as well as continuing research into nuclear materials such as uranium235 which would be used for Hiroshima bombing two years later
