In 1897, two German immigrants named Johann Hecht and Wilhelm Kühn founded a small shop called Koffeehaus Hecht & Kühn on County Road 200 near present day Gouda Boulevard. In 1902, Hecht and Kühn joined forces with local businessman Arthur Weiser to open what would become known as the Hecht-Weiser Coffee Shop. From this point forward, Loma Linda would become home to one of the most important coffee businesses in Northern California. TheHecht-Weiser Coffee Shop was a few years later renamed the Weiser Coffee Company after its founders’ father,Arthur Weiser Sr. In 1957, the company was acquired by ABC Corporation which kept it until 1991 when it was sold to Milken Enterprises LLC for $2 million (some say it was worth more). At that time, Loma Linda became part of Schwarzenegger’s congressional district and produced much interest in legislating caffeine policy due to its proximity to Sacramento. Since then, Loma Linda has seen steady growth in both coffee production and consumption; today there are over 20 full-time employees at their roasting plant and cafes throughout the town center. In addition to their product line including whole bean coffees as well as blends – all made using premium Arabica beans from Latin America – Loma Linda also offers chocolates and pastries made with chocolate milk or cream based products.
