Lincoln, California is a small town in the heart of California's wine country. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census, up from 5,859 at the 2000 census. It is located in Mendocino County. The Lincoln Mission was founded by Father Francisco Xavier de Andrade in 1846 and dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi. The mission had two buildings: the convent and the main church which stands today on Castro Street. The first president of what is now Mendocino County, George Cascades (1860-1924), served as pastor at Lincoln until he resigned to become a U.S. Senator from Oregon in 1924. In 1868, when American Civil War veteran John Dimmick settled east of Sacramento near present-day Dixonville, he chose to name his new community for Abraham Lincoln who had been an important figure during the war and also for whom Dimmick had found a home in Illinois as a young man. After Dimmick's death in 1875, his widow donated land northwest of Dixonville to make way for what would become Calaveras County; she named it after her late husband's favorite general Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1884). Lincoln grew slowly but steadily over several decades before reaching its peak around 1930 with a population of 10,000 people; however this growth stopped abruptly when World War II intervened and destroyed much of the town center including both the convent and main church which were rebuilt post-war using materials gleaned from nearby military installations like Fort Bragg and Yountville Air Force Base%. A smaller community called "Mendoza" developed just northeast of Lincoln next to Interstate 95 where many local farmers raised chickens or pigs then took them home for dinner or eggs until 1955 when Highway 1 came throughsinging "Mendoza has gone away".
