The history of artisan coffee begins with the early 1800s when small farmers in the valleys of California began marketing their own coffee. The first large-scale production of coffee took place in Indonesia, where coffee was grown for export to Java and other Southeast Asian countries. Coffee beans were brought back to California by traders and immigrants, and small time roasters began to form. These small roasters served a limited number of customers at local cafes until the late 1800s when cafés became more common and larger roasters announced they would provide better quality beans at lower prices. During this time, there were many different types of coffee being roasted, including Arabica, Robusta, Columbian, Sumatra Bintunan, and Maximiliano Fernandez Types IIB-IIIA. In addition to different roastings methods ( infusion or dry/ wet processing), these different coffees also had different flavor profiles which associated them with particular regions or areas in California. However, all of these coffees started out as affordable blends meant for personal consumption by locals who enjoyed a unique cup of coffee that was not mass produced elsewhere. In 1952, two American businessmen named Gordon Bowker and Wally Hammond bought a farm near Laguna Niguel that included a mill that ground whole beans into flour for printing purposes. They decided to start their own business selling specialty coffees under the name "The Wanderer." This initial venture was successful enough that they decided to open a full-service café called The Grapesvine Café on May 8th, 1953 which is still in operation today as one of Laguna Niguel's most popular tourist destinations! The area was first populated by Native Americans and then by Europeans. In 1821, the United States acquired Rancho Santa Ana from Mexico. This land included present-day Laguna Niguel. The U.S. government built a post here to keep track of military troops in and out of Mexican territory. The town started off as a small settlement called New San Diego on what is now Menlo Park Boulevard. It grew quickly because of its natural resources: minerals, water, and lumber. Over time, Laguna Niguel became an important transportation hub for the region because it had a railroad station and two brief access points to the Pacific Ocean! In 1846, the area now known as Laguna Niguel was part of Spanish California. The Mexican mission San Francisco de Asís was founded in 1769 and by 1821, it had become a United States military post under command of General Gabriel Mora. Mexico ceded California to the United States in 1848 and by 1850, most of what is now Laguna Niguel belonged to the US. The first permanent settler in Laguna Niguel was Captain Elias James Astor who came overland from Alameda County, California in 1827. He built a small adobe cabin on a bluff overlooking the lagoon called "Badwater" which he named for his home town of Alameda, California. Astor became one of the wealthiest man in Northern California because he developed large holdings in land, salt mines and cattle operations. In 1849, American Commodore John Doolittle led an expedition across the Pacific Ocean to explore new routes to India and China through Central America and South America. On their return trip they discovered an opening into Asia that they named "the Golden Gate" after Admiral George Preble's screw steamer Golden Eagle that had reached this point during their exploration. The first European settlement at Laguna Niguel began with Americans led by José Joaquín Balboa who arrived in 1795 and claimed almost all of present-day Orange County before dying from yellow fever onboard his shipwrecked fleet off Santa Barbara Peninsula on November 12th, 1800>. Laguna Niguel became a thriving local agricultural center due to its rich soil, good water resources and easy access to shipping lanes connecting Asia with North America. In 1907–08 there were 553 businesses registered with the US Chamber of Commerce here; this represented more than half of all business registration in Southern California at that time
