The name was given to the lagoon on which it stands by then- governor of California John Beale in 1887. Laguna Beach is located on the southern coast of Orange County and extends into San Diego County to its northwestern extremity. One result was the founding of Temecula by Vasquez and his associates in 1849; also Temecula became an early town site when Spanish colonists abandoned Alta Mesa five miles northeast of Temecula during setting up of Rancho Santa Ana y Mohábili about 1850 ().
