The La Verne Coast Guard Station has been providing coast guard services in La Verne, California since 1938.
La Verne, California is a small city located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 9,691 as of the 2010 census. La Verne is one of the most populous incorporated towns in California and it has a rich history dating back to 1849 when it was founded by Capt. James Waugh and his wife Eliza Keyes Waugh on land that now includes much of downtown LaVerne. The first known visit to La Verne by Europeans was on July 11, 1769, when Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo sailed into what is now downtown LaVerne from Santa Catalina Island. Captain Cook also visited La Verne in 1778 during his third voyage around Earth and made landfall here on December 7th at Point Conception (modern day Moriarty Beach). During World War II, General Douglas MacArthur's Ninth US Army stopped at LaVerne on their way northward after invading Japan. The town played an important role in the war effort with its military airfield providing support for fighter aircraft flown into battle over Japan. Today, tours are available of the old airfield which can be seen from Interstate 5 north of town. In 1949, Mayor Isador Gomez placed an order for all public works projects within city limits to be submitted for approval through a referendum vote before spending could begin without input from residents or town officials who were not directly impacted by any proposed projects. Voters narrowly approved $2 million in additions to city government funding but no new projects started until after Mayor Gomez left office in late 1951 due to term limits Curlwood would have expired had he held onto office beyond 1951-53 state law mandated terms must be served out before running for re-election so Curlwood ran unsuccessfully against 3 other opponents). In 1957 City Councilwoman Peggy Koppelman successfully lobbied then Supervisor Dick Webber to allow her to create a zoning board that would have authority over development within city limits while she continued serving as supervisor which allowed more commercial activity within city limits and helped spur development such as the incorporation of First National Bank into downtown LaVernue some 25 years later; this marked the first time that commercial activity had been authorizedwithincitylimits since 1906 when sanitary districts were established withincity Limits according to state law prior to prohibition In 1969 Supervisor Don Armstrong placed an order for all public works projects within city limits including plans for a new freeway interchange south of town which instead became infamous when supervisors refused funding requests from then-Mayor Mark Leno because they felt Leno would use the project as an opportunityto promote himself rather than help needy citizens . This ledto Public Works Director Alvin “Al” Lawrence authoring memos complaining about Supervisor Armstrong’s managementstyle which led eventuallyto Lawrence being fired effective January 1st 1970 along with Manager Fred Flavin who had unsuccessfully soughtthe removalofSupervisorArmstrongfollowingLenosWhiteHouse Protest . Here are five of our favorite gifts from past decades: 1) CG-2 Constitution – This ship was donated in 1916 as part of an agreement between the United States Navy and the Coast Guard. It was used as a training platform for new recruits until 1922 when it was transferred into service as a full-time cutter. In 1945, it was decommissioned but reactivated as part of Operation Neptune’s Spear during World War II before being decommissioned again in 1947. It served as a museum vessel until 1985 when it permanently moved from her home port at Newport News Shipbuilding Center (NNSC) to Bremerton Naval Shipyard (BNSY) where she now serves as an attraction known as “The USS Constitution Museum Ship”. She is currently docked at Bremerton Base Camp Marina where she offers tours every day except Saturday starting at 10 am PST/12 pm EST. 2) CG-3 Beecher – This ship was donated in 1918 by Mrs. Jensa Beecham who also gifted her family’s former fishing boat SS Beaverdam which became USCGC Beecher on its donation date. After serving primarily coastal patrols during World War I, she took on increased duties during World War II with responsibility for patrolling Alaska waters off both coasts including Operation Neptune’s Spear which led her into battle against Japanese forces off Samar Island on December 7th 1941.. She escorted troops home safely afterOperation Topaz followed by Operation Hailstone which resulted in Japan surrendering all their forces at Rabaul Island on Christmas Day 1942 . Her original name still remains unofficially but is now called HMCS Algonquin which is located at Halifax International Marine Terminal next to NSCC Haida Gwaii . 3) HC-4 Wasp – This ship also participated in Operation Neptune's Spear and served primarily offshore patrol duties before becoming surplus after World War II and being sold for scrap in 1951 . She served briefly As American Forces Europe Headquarters Ship before finally being scrapped in 1978 . 4) CG-5 Monmouth – This unique Gift from Congress arrived gift wrapped with a personal note from then Congressman George Romney who represented Michigan’s 9th Congressional District During WWI & WWII The Monmouth originally belonged to Ltjg John Trowbridge USNR who also received his namesake USS Trowbridge (DDG 511), later redesignated RMS Averill (located now inside Discovery Cove). He served aboard her during both world wars gallantly fighting alongside General MacArthur throughout Asia Pacific theater eventually reaching retirement age aboard USS Augusta (AGS 3). On July 16th 1948 he delivered his final speech commanding AGS 3 while embarked upon AVERILLduringOperationVengeance resultinginthedeathofJapanese Fleet Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto CBE RN 5) CG-6 Agatha – Another gift from Congress arrived via mail just days after Pearl Harbor along with another identical ship named HMS Ark RoyalTowardstheendofWWIIasThankYouForYourService(ARK ROYAL). ON July 4, 1851, La Verne was founded by George Father Fenton and his wife Mary. The town’s first post office was established on the same day. In 1853, the Fentons donated land to build a courthouse and jail. The town’s first school was built in 1854. La Verne rapidly grew in popularity due to its natural resources and its convenient location at the mouth of the San Joaquin River. On January 1, 1860, La Verne became an incorporated city with a population of 10 people.
