La Habra, California is a small city in Orange County, California. It was founded in 1887 by brothers George and John La Habra. The city served as the capital of the recently acquired Imperial County from 1893 to 1915. After 1916 it became a part of the new San Bernardino County. In 1926 it merged with Riverside, California to form Riverside-La Habra Township. La Habra's population reached about 100,000 in 1950 and 300,000 by 1990. The history of La Habra begins with George and John LaHabra who settled on a small rancho (property) near present-day La Habra Heights east of downtown on February 14th, 1887. From their ranch they erected a shack and started trading goods with local Native American tribes for firewood and other items necessary for their farmstead grew into what is now known as citrus country in eastern Orange County where they cultivated oranges, apples and other fruits for export to Southern California during the late 1800s In 1893 following Mexican annexation of Californias newly formed Empire State there were plans to move the capital from Los Angeles due to lack of space at City Hall but when Governor Manuel LMexican vetoed this measure President Grover Cleveland put together a special commission that decided that since La HabRA had been an integral part of America since its inception many more permanent homes could be built here so on December 12th 1893 groundbreaking took place for what would become one of America’s first planned communities The original town hall building still stands today within walking distance of all businesses located within la habra township including Walmart Supercenter which opened its doors in 2016 The growth and success of la habra led other townships such as Moreno Valley (1927), Fontana (1948), South El Monte (1965) Irwindale (1979) along with various annexations until finally incorporated into Riverside-La Habra Township upon its establishment on October 15th 1950 having an enrollment exceeding 300,000 people Today it has over 200K residents making it one of OC’s most populous cities Aboriginal People: The Hahbrah or “Natives” were Native Americans who lived near present day LaHaBra Heights prior to European settlement although some information suggests they may have resided closer to present day Fountain Valley . They are thought to have been descendents from both Coast Miwok Tribe & Ohlone Tribe . Many members may have also intermarried with settlers . Census records show that there were between 350 – 400 natives living within la habra townshiplimits at any given time however according to oral traditions few if any remain today
