It was part of the Western Defense Command, which was later renamed The Unified Combat Arms Command. The plant produced ordnance for the United States military from 1942 until it closed in 1992. The FVAAP was one of several ammunition plants built by the Union Metallic Mining and Manufacturing Corporation (UMMC) during World War II in response to the need for munitions production in the Pacific theater. The plant opened on October 16, 1942 and produced shells and bombs for use by both American and Japanese forces. By 1945, production had increased to meet wartime demand, but by 1949 it had fallen to low levels due to competition from newer plants. In 1951, UMMC sold its assets to Raytheon Company, which continued operations as Raytheon-UMMC until 1992 when it merged with Lockheed Martin Company.
