Small batch coffee has been a part of Fortuna, California’s culture for over 100 years. The first small batch coffee house was opened in 1914 by Mr. and Mrs. John A. Smith, who had the idea to start a business that would source and roast their own coffee from their farmstead on the corner of Second Street and Fourth Avenue. Over time, other businesses have cropped up around the area that sell smallbatch coffee, including King Coffee Company (now closed), Sloppy Joe’s Cafe (now defunct), and The Hole in the Wall Café (now open). Today, there are more than 20 small batch coffeehouses throughout Fortuna, with approximately 2-3 shops total serving different varieties of fogata misto coffees made fresh each day. Fogata misto is a type of Italian breakfast food typically eaten at lunchtime or dinner time and consists of two cups of espresso blended with one or more eggs, toast, ham or cheese. In addition to its cultural significance, small batch coffee also offers delicious flavor profiles that can only be found here in Fortuna!

Fortuna is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It is located on the east side of the Kern River. Fortuna was founded in 1851 by George Winton and his brother-in-law Prentice Dyer. In 1875, Fortuna became part of the Gold Rushtowns of central California. The towns thrived during the era of goldmining but declined after the industry shut down in 1883. By 1907, Fortuna had shrunk to just over 100 residents. In 1951, a group of local businesses decided to adopt a new name for their community: "Fortunate". This name reflected how much good luck they were having since they were all owned by people who had made it big or were otherwise successful. The original buildings still stand today and are used as a museum and conference center respectively. The history of Fortuna can be traced back to 1851 when George Winton and Prentice Dyer set out from Sutter's Fort on horseback to found what would become known as Fortuna. At first they only hunted game but soon realized that there was an abundance of Produce available which they could sell along with some clothesline goods to local farmers for subsistence purposes while mining for gold! They also built themselves a cabin which served as their home until 1862 when they moved into what is now the Historic District which included most of what remains today including their original cabin (now called "The Winton Cabin") as well as four other buildings that served as their business headquarters from 1861 through 1865: The Store, blacksmith shop, wagon shop, and post office! In 1865 George Winton died suddenly leaving his wife Mary with 4 children; three daughters married into wealthy families while one daughter married into another wealthy family but left behind her father's rancho holdings so she inherited everything! After Mrs. Winton's death in 1893 two more daughters joined their mother's lawsuit against Guggenheim Brothers AG; one eldest sister became known as Florence (married Harry Houde) while youngest sister Estelle (married John Leland) took up arms with Dell Post Company against Guggenheim Brothers AG!! As it turned out both sisters lost however Florence managed to keep her Rancho holdings plus considerable money!!! Their legacy lives on today thanks in part to descendants such as Edwin Houde who runs EHX Energy Partners LP., Francesca Leland who has been involved in politics throughout Southern California and Alix Houde whose father ran K&L Gates Corporation during prohibition!
Fortuna was founded in 1871 by Capt. John Fortunato and his wife, Eliza. The town prospered as a small farming community until the discovery of oil in 1911. In that year, an oilrig was built on the nearby Coast Ranchero Peninsula and began production of gasoline and other products. The influx of workers generated large amounts of social unrest and Fortunato responded with measures to address grievances such as worker benefits, maternity leave, and educational opportunities for women. By 1922, however, Fortunato had sold the rigs to Texaco and the town declined in popularity. It re-emerged as a small ranching community after Texaco discontinued production in the early 1990s.
