The El Paso De Robles Air National Guard Wing is one of the oldest and most distinguished wings in the United States Air Force. It was activated on 1 September 1912 as part of Continental Federal Services, a predecessor to the Air Force. The wing's first commanding officer was Major General John M. Cronin, who served from 1912 until 1916. The wing's first commander-in-chief was Brigadier General Arthur S. Hillman, who served from 1916 until 1919. From 1919 until 1951, the wing was commanded by Colonel James Kappenheimer. After Colonel Kappenheimer's retirement on 15 October 1951, the wing became an Associate Commandant organization with member commands located at locations throughout the country under a single commandant general arrangement until 1 January 1957 when it became an independent command with its own headquarters and subordinate commands located at El Paso De Robles AFB (later El Paso International Airport). From 1 January 1957 until 1 July 1960, Headquarters, Aerospace Defense Command (ADCOM) controlled all aircraft operations within ADCOM jurisdiction over all USAF units stationed within that airspace; however, this authority expired on 31 December 1958 upon Controller General Order No. 2 which transferred ownership of all USAF airspace to Tactical Air Command (TAC). The City of El Paso De Robles is located in the southern part of San Bernardino County, California. The name of the town was based on the Spanish word “El Paso” which means “the entrance” and “de” meaning “of”. The original settlers were Spanish-speaking Catholics and they named their town after St. Patrick, who had died in Mexico City some years earlier. The first building in El Paso De Robles was a log cabin thatched with straw that was used as a schoolhouse for children from nearby villages. In 1907, a post office was built and it remained in operation until 1912 when it became known as El Paso Dominguez Post Office. In 1922, an Electric Railway Company (later known as Southern Pacific Railroad) station was built at the edge of town and it remains operational today. In 1924, El Paso Dominguez Airport opened and it still serves as one of the busiest airports in Southern California. In 1957, El Paso De Robles became an incorporated city under state law and its mayor at that time was Amedeo Alfonso de Alvarado y Ocampo (1890-1964). At that time, there were only about 50 residents living within city limits and most of them worked outside the city or farms within commuting distance. However, over time more people began arriving to live in El Paso De Robles due to its growing economy which involved manufacturing industries such as plastics production and automobile manufacturing; these industries have since retreated but continue to generate jobs within city limits. As recently as 2000, there were 805 full-time employees working withincity limits while another 496 employed individuals lived within commuting distance for work purposes; this indicated that although many aspects of local life have changed over time – including increasing suburbanization – employment has not shifted much away from downtown areas throughout San Bernardino County overall since 1997 whenElPasoDOD postal service merged with United States Postal Service - making it one of only two U.S.-based post offices remaining open continuously across all fifty U .S . states plus Washington D . C .
