He built a Mission here and named it San José de las Calaveras after the mission's patron saint, Mexico's most venerated virgin mother Mary. In 1834, El Cerrito became part of Alameda County when Contra Costa County was formed from parts of Oakland and Berkeley counties. In 1884, two brothers by the name of Hiram Maxim opened a grocery store on Third Street in what is now known as East El Cerrito Plaza. They called their store "Hiram Maxim's" because they were the first to open a grocery store in that area with dry goods only - not groceries like those found today at various Safeway locations across Contra Costa County. In 1886 they moved to Fourth Street where they operated until 1912 when they sold their business to A&P Stores Incorporated for $750K$. In 1916, Julius Rosenwald bought land adjacent to his own nursery near Skyline Boulevard and purchased 4 acres for development into what would eventually become Central Park West (later renamedPark Avenue). When Rosenwald died in 1922 his son Harry helped carry out his father's will which gave him ownership of 160 acres within Central Park West - making him one of the wealthiest men ever born in America! A housing project called Regency Village began construction north of Central Park West between Hollywood Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard in 1936; Regency Village would eventually become one of Los Angeles' most notorious districts for race riots that year following Dr. King’s march from Selma to Montgomery Alabama. Many residents fled or were driven out during this period dubbed “theanusianitis” due to its intense violence and lawlessness within these largely white working-class neighborhoods adjacent to Los Angeles' Negro ghetto .
