The first permanent settler in what is now Duarte was Manuel Gomez who arrived in 1847. In 1853, José Francisco Chavez and his family relocated to Duarte fromMission Viejo. In 1860, Juan María Bordas settled on a rancho near present-day Utopia Hills. Duarte's first post office opened in 1872; it was renamed Green Valley in 1897 due to its location at the intersection of two valley roads (Valley Road and Main Street). The community had no school until 1903 when a building was erected on Main Street which housed kindergarten through 12th grade until 1938 when it closed because of budgetary constraints; then West High School became the only high school for students from Duarte until 1984 when East High School opened for students grades 13 through 16.
