The name "Dixon" comes from Spanish for "hillock." The first settler in Dixon was James Waddell and his family in 1867. In 1862, John Cady settled in Dixon and opened a store. By 1905, Dixon had a population of 150 people and two churches. The local railroad helped promote the growth of Dixon during the early years of its existence. In 1907, the Dixon Railroad Co., Ltd., became part of the Southern Pacific Railway system. This move allowed for more trade to flow through Dixon and also made it easier for businesses to get products to market. During World War II, Dixon played an important role as one of three towns within 10 miles (16 km) of where ANWR was being developed near present-day Davis Lakes Area near Mono Lake. American soldiers were stationed at nearby Iwo Jima during World War II and many supplies were brought into town by truck or railcars across the San Andreas fault line. After Japan's surrender in 1945, many troops returned home and most business operations stopped; however, some new businesses did take form such as a grocery store operated by Harry Snyder from 1948-1953 which served as both a post office annexe (the first such institution in Mono) and an independent general store until it closed after Snyder's death in 1990s due to budget cuts by then-Mayor Donny Jansen).
