In 1857, it became part of the Mexican territory of Monterey and then to U.S.T., when Mexico ceded it to America in 1881. The first European settler in Dinuba was José Ortega who arrived there on July 9, 1847 from Mazatlán with his family and other explorers looking for new land to exploit in California's interior during the Gold Rush era. Ortega claimed an area which would eventually become Dinuba City on September 5, 1848 with his brother Vicente Nieto as his partner Ortega built a small house near present day Highway 12 and Mission Road along what is now Point Reyes Beach Boulevard In 1850 Juan Bautista Caneta discovered saltpeter mines here that led to continued gold discovery throughout much of California until about 1865 when most mining stopped due to lack of water supply In 1862 Captain John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort at Point Reyes after finding gold near Tubac Creek In 1865 Lieutenant George Alderdice commandeered a tugboat called "Laguna" to transport 500 men overland from Sacramento through Mono Lake en route to discoveries near Folsom Field but they all died during their journey eastward
