Diamond Bar is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, located about 30 miles east of Fresno. The population was 5,374 at the 2010 census. Diamond Bar is one of several small towns served by the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department. The name "Diamond Bar" is most likely derived from an early Spanish mission named San Buenaventura de la Sierra (St. Bernardino Mission), established in 1777 on land now part of Diamond Bar Township and south of Del Rey Downs. The mission was abandoned in 1827 and its site reverted to Mexican ownership until it was purchased by the United States in 1848 as part of Rancho Cahuilla. In 1881, it became part of Stanislaus County when it was organized from parts of Humboldt, Kern and Tulare Counties. The first post office at Diamond Bar opened on July 1, 1850, under the name Post Office No. 2 (later changed to Post Office No. 3). It was renamed Diamond Station in 1865 due to difficulties finding a namesake for the new town which had been founded only a few miles away from where Mineral Wells had been established two years earlier. The first store operated out of a log cabin owned by Wm Fenton for six months before being built more permanently around 1870 by John Dutton Jr., who also operated what would become known as Dutton's Store andgeneral merchandise emporium until his death in 1893.. Diamond Bar has been inhabited by humans since at least 10,000 years ago and was first called Quinaltah. A mission was established here in 1847 by Father Francisco García de la Cruz and his companions, who were seeking to find new land for the Mission San Fernando Rey de España near what is now Fresno. In 1851, Diamond Bar became part of the Rancho Los Alamos Mexican land grant given to José Castro y Piñon. When Mexico lost its independence in 1848, the United States took over most of Mexico and this included ranchos such as Los Alamos which reverted to Mexican control after a few years. The United States government gave it back to Castro y Piñon in 1853 when he became president ofMexico City. The town site was chosen because it had lots of good minerals that could be tapped for gold and other products from quartz veins found thereabouts. The first post office opened in 1903; diamond bar being one word with several meaningsconnected with it: (1) "diamond" or "variety thereof", (2) "sapphire", (3) "garnet", (4) "aluminum ore," etc.; alluding either to its natural color or its scarce occurrence elsewhere on earth due to Earth's orbit around the sun thanAnywhere else!
