Policemen have been providing service to the community in Coronado, California for over a hundred years. The first policeman on the scene was Captain George A. Hill and his team responded to a call for help from citizens in 1878. The patrol was continued by Captain John P. Hennessey, who served until 1902. Captain Harry Ladd took office in 1903 and remained until 1916 when he was succeeded by Lieutenant Edward Sargent. In 1916, Lieutenant Sargent became assistant district attorney and then Deputy District Attorney before he retired in 1930. With the retirement of Lieutenant Sargent, the department turned to civilians for police service and Francisco Gomez became acting deputy district attorney in 1930. From 1933-1936, Harry Buhl served as acting deputy district attorney before becoming the full time officer again in 1936 He served until his death in 1949. After Mr. Buhl’s death, Acting District Attorney Don Hinton took office with the job title of policewoman until 1954 when Mrs. Hinton became full time officer after serving as interim duringMr.Hinton’s absence from office due to illness

The name Coronado is associated with many things in California. The first was the Spanish explorer and missionary, Juan Bautista de Anza, who named it after the city of Palermo, Sicily. He discovered this area in 1769 while exploring along the coast of southern California. Later on, other explorers followed Bautista de Anza's lead and explored this part of California. One of these was José Antonio Nieto, who arrived in 1821 and named the area after General Don Manuel Mariano Arguelles y Costilla—the first governor of Alta California (upper California). During Mexican rule over Alta California (upper California), this region was called Rancho San Diego de la Ventura. After American independence from Mexico occurred in 1848, General Stephen Kearny sold Rancho San Diego to Captain Pacheco for $3,000 cash. This area became known as Los Angeles County. Captain Pacheco started building a ranch here called Los Angeles Mission Santa Rosalia near what is now downtown LA about 1840. The mission was abandoned in 1846 because of disease that attacked early missions hereabouts—a problem that would plague later Californios (native Americans) until well into the 20th century. In 1849 Captain Pacheco founded what became known as Coronado Rancho because he saw an ideal location for a sheep station on san Bernardino Mountains between two valleys: one running north-south and one running east-west. In 1850 he erected a small adobe building there which served as his headquarters during his ranching operations northwest of today's downtown LA; he also built a small chapel nearby to house his missionaries and their families when they were not traveling through Orange County or visiting sick missionaries at their mission stations farther up the mountainside thoroughfare known today as State Route 129 Alternate (SR 129A). However by1852 captain pacheco discontinued all his activities at rancho coronado due to increasing competition from more well- financed ranches farther down river including Sutter’s Mill on Sacramento River opposite town where gold had been discovered some years earlier by prospectors under license from US Minerals Company founder John Dutton at Gold Rush time renamed Empire Range Mines

From this point on, there was much conflict between America and Mexico over who should control this land. Eventually, California was divided into two parts - Alta California (the highlands) and Baja California (the lowlands). The area now known as Coronado is located in Alta California. In 1848, John Cushing founded what would become Coronado Rancho Real in present-day Coronado National Monument. This rancho consisted of about 20 acres (8 hectares) and housed up to 150 head OF cattle per year. It was here that he discovered oil shale deposits which would later be valuable for petroleum production. In 1865, John Wesley Powell traveled through this region on his way to find a route through the Rockies towards Oregon Territory. While exploring these areas he came across some ruins at what is now Tomales Bayou State Park near Seal Beach Harbor outside Of City Hall Park today's city limits This site has been designated as one ofAmerica's most significant archaeological sites because it contains evidence from Prehistoric times including pottery shards dating back 8500 years!1
In 1795, the Spanish built a small fort on San Diego Bay in order to control the trade between California and Mexico. A year later they founded Mission San Francisco de Asís on Point Conception. The mission was known for its strict rules against Christianity, and it is said that only "Widows, orphans, and heathens" were allowed into the compound. The first European to visit California was Gaspar de Portolà in 1769. After his exploration of the area he reported back that there was no land beyond Mexicali and nothing suitable for habitation other than vast amounts of salt water. In 1776, Franciscan friars from Mission Santa Clara founded Mission Dolores at Presidio Hill in what is now Soquel Valley. The presidio served as a military garrison until 1821 when it was transferred to the Mexican government as part of Rancho San Jose del Norte. During Mexican rule California became one of severalomingos (a type of hacienda) owned by wealthy landowners called mestizos or Native Americans who had joined forces with Spain during the Mexican War of Independence. This period is also understood to be when California began its Gold Rush mining industry because many miners arrived after 1848 as a result of subsidies given by Mexico City governments keen on exploiting new mineral deposits across Central America
