The original roastery was operated by John Hildebrand and his wife, Linda, who were both natives of Coalinga. They roasted beans on a two-acre lot next to their home until they could purchase a larger parcel of land and built a new structure in 1974. The first espresso machine was purchased from Italy in 1977 and used to roast coffee for their customers. In 1984, the Hildebrand family sold the business to Rick Steves who continued to operate it as Rick's Coffee until 2000 when he retired. In 2006, another owner took over the business, Brian Bahrman. Bahrman has been running the store since 2007 and is still responsible for all aspects of operations including marketing, shipping, accounting, and daily cleaning/maintenance. He also oversees production which currently totals around 100 pounds per day with plans for more growth in the future. Currently there are three primary types of coffee being brewed at Rick's Coffee: dark roast (French press), light roast (barista), or Ethiopian Yirgacheffe beans (50% Arabica). In addition to these primary styles there are variations such as single origin or specialty blends that can be ordered online or through phone ordering. The history of Coalinga goes back to 1848 when a group of gold seekers led by Captain John Sutter set out from Sacramento on horseback for what would become one of the most important discoveries in American history - Gold Rush country! Over the next few years they discovered large amounts of gold and silver hidden in deep canyon bottoms and hillsides throughout this region known as the Coalinga Valley. Captain Sutter's party arrived at their new settlement on January 12, 1851, just over two months after it had been founded! The town quickly flourished under the leadership of Captain Sutter and his three assistants: James Waddell, William Cushing and Brigham Young! Throughout its early years, Coalinga made significant contributions to California's development. In 1865 it became an incorporated city with a population of over 60 thousand people! In 1923 it merged with nearby Menifee to form the current community of Menifee/Coalinga! The name "Coalinga" comes from Spanish meaning "coal mine." The first live coal mine in Coalinga was opened by Mexican miners in 1875. In 1902, the American brothers Harry and Clarence Condon opened the first modern-day openpit coal mine in Kern County. However, it failed to take off and closed down in 1916. In 1906, Harry Condon's son Ernest built a small mill on the San Juan River south of Coalinga for grinding rice for local farmers. Ernest also started to sell watermelons and other vegetables out of his mill. By 1922, when Ernest died, his son still operated the mill until it was sold to Southern Pacific Railroad in 1951. In 1917 there were only a few hundred people living hereabouts; however since World War II there has been an steady growth with over 12000 residents now residing within its boundaries! The mining industry declined after World War II but has revived somewhat due to new technology such as hydraulic fracturing (fracking). With all this recent growth came increased needs for transportation infrastructure including roads and bridges which have made things more difficult for smaller communities throughout Kern County that don’t have easy access to larger metropolitan areas like Bakersfield or Fresno!
