Coalinga is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,214 at the 2010 census. It is located within the Coalinga Unified School District. The first Europeans to visit Coalinga were Captains Juan Rodriguez and Francisco Pico in 1769. A grant of land was given to Francisco Sanchez in 1825 by Governor Manuel Nieto. In 1852, George W. Dixon built a store on the banks of the Siuslaw River here which became known as Dixon's Store. The community prospered until 1906 when an oil well was discovered and produced fuel for automobiles in nearby Kernville; this led to increased traffic and demand for goods from Coalinga merchants who exported these commodities. In 1916, Arroyo Drive (now US 101) was designated as County Route 710 which led through Coalinga into Kern County; it remained so designation until 1977 when it was changed to its current routing along I-580 east/west highway corridor south of town; one reason for this change may have been that then-County Supervisor Michael White wanted more development near I-580 rather than rural areas populated by agricultural families with ties to their farmssteads and churches). In 1978, the old courthouse building burned down and replaced with a new one just north of town on First Street (now State Route 162). That same year saw the opening of what is now known as "TheOld Store" restaurant across from TheOldStore plaza on US 101; old sourdough bread being served there up until 2006 has been famous throughout Northern California since then! In 2002, after years of planning by various groups including The Old Store employees themselves as well as citizens who had gathered outside during meetings concerning plans for developing around the newly opened Walmart Supercenter just east of town center on SR 162, groundwork had already been laid out for what would become Station Square Shopping Center - originally conceptualized as an open-air mall with restaurants, stores and office space - when it opened in 2004 adjacent to SR 162 across from Main Street Elementary School bearing much resemblance both externally (largely pre-fabricated wood frame structure) as well as internally (multi-level parking garage + large retail spaces beneath roof) to "TheOldStore". During its construction phase it included addition of a pedestrian bridge overSR 162 from Main Street eastward linking Station Square Shopping Center with downtown Coalinga via an underground pedestrian walkway accessed via ramps leading down from SR 162 immediately north of Main Street Elementary School - becoming one block away from Interstate 580 between SR 161A & 163A Streets Downtown! All told there are now six buildings totaling over 350,000 square feet containing approximately 150 retailers plus 12 apartments/condos providing housing units; alluding back again to "TheOldStore" plaza where shoppers could come together outdoors awaiting their turn inside!
