Coalinga, California is a town in Riverside County, California, United States. The population was 8,802 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Victorville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Coalinga were the Tongva and their descendants. They started fishing and trading with other groups in Central Valley region before coming ashore on San Pedro Bay in 1821 to build a mission. In 1846, they built Mission San Gabriel Rey de las Americas on Rancho Penuelas near present-day Coalinga for Spanish missionaries. The town began as an agricultural community with small scale ranching but soon became a commercial center due to its location at the mouth of the San Joaquin River and its access to shipping lanes. In 1909, Coalinga voters approved annexation by Riverside County; it was formally incorporated on February 24, 1912. Coalinga started as a small, unincorporated community in the Kern County area of California. The first post office was established at Coalinga in 1876. The name "Coalinga" is derived from the Spanish word "coal," which was used to describe the local sandstone resources. Coalmining began in Coalinga around 1875 and continued until about 1920. In 1906, a group of businessmen organized what became known as the Independent Petroleum Company to develop oil fields in Kern County. The company grew rapidly and by 1912 had acquired over half of all production from Kern County wells. In 1916, the company merged with Standard Oil Company of California and became Standard-Coal & Navigation Company.
