The California Air National Guard's 142nd Fighter Wing is the last active duty fighter wing in the United States. It was activated on 15 August 1942 at Chino Hills Municipal Airport, adjacent to Chino Hills Airport, as part of the United States Army Air Forces. The wing served withoth e USAAF until 8 May 1946 when it was reassigned to the USAF. The wing operated F-94 Starfighters until 9 February 1973 and then upgraded to F-16 Fighting Falcons from 1 November 1978 through 14 September 1984. The 142nd Fighter Wing moved its operations to Joint Base Lewis-McChord AFB, Washington in 1993 and became an air combat unit again on 1 January 1994 under the name 142nd Tactical Fighter Wing (142 TFW). On 16 October 1995, during Operation Neptune's Spear, the former home of Headquarters 146th Tactical Airlift Wing (146 TAW) was transferred from Joint Base Lewis-McChord AFB to Sacramento County Regional Airport for use as a new home for the 142 TFW. On 18 April 2006, it was announced that elements of both wings would deploy simultaneously on 6 May 2006 for Operation Neptune's Spear – Operation Americale II – which involved flying missions over Iraq in support of coalition forces fighting against Saddam Hussein's regime. As part of this operation, elements from both wings flew together for three days nonstop from McChord AFB. During this mission their aircraft were damaged by artillery fire while taking off from Joint Base Lewis-McChord AFB; however they were able to land back at Lewis-McChord AFB without any damage and returned safely to their bases later that day. Withdrawal of all warfighter units effective 27 June 2006 marked end of hostilities in Iraq; however not all members of those units had completed their final deployment requirements and remained at their respective bases awaiting disposition orders or other instructions pending mobilization or activation elsewhere within the USAF or National Guard Armies outside of America. At least sixteenth Wing personnel were mobilized and activated elsewhere within AFW prior to withdrawal; these individuals will be assigned directlyto unit/wing headquarters upon return if called into service pursuant to an orderfrom higher headquarters. The Chino Hills Air Force Base gift history dates back to the early 1950s. The base was founded in 1948 as Camp Chaffee, and it soon became home to the United States Air Force's Ninth Wing. In 1951, the wing was renamed the 9th Bombardment Wing and moved to its current location on Chino Hills AFB. The wing has served in many roles over the years, including being a unit of Strategic Air Command (SAC), Eighth Air Force, and Fifteenth Air Force during World War II; and later becoming an operational tactical airpower command during the Cold War. The 9th BW is currently commanded by Colonel Gregory Ewing. This gift history can be traced back to his arrival at Chino Hills AFB in 1951 as commanding general of Ninth Wing. He helpedestablish this unit as one of SAC's most successful wings with its missions flying strategic bombers into enemy airspace for attack purposes. After serving in numerous leadership positions within Ninth Wing throughout his career, he assumed command of Eighth AF in 2006 when General James Mattis succeeded him as USAF commander-in-chief. colonelgregoryewing@gmail
Chino Hills is located in Inyo County, California and is a census-designated place. As of the 2010 census, the population was 16,972. The name originated from Chino Creek which flowed through the community. The area that would become Chino Hills was first settled by Native Americans in the late 1800s. The first white settlers arrived in 1881 when J.B. Richardson built a cabin on an parcel of land he purchased near present-day Chino Hills High School. That year, Chino Springs Road was established as a wagon road between Yuma and Claremont to provide goods and services to local farmers and their families. In 1902, Charles Sather bought 6 acres (2 ha) of adjacent Rancho San Bernardino land north of present-day Chino Hills Cemetery for $1,000 cash. At this time, San Bernardino County was organized into three districts: Anza District included today’s Inyo County; Death Valley District including parts of Today’s Riverside County; and Mono District including all or part of today’s Kern County. Sather renamed his new property “Chino Hills” after his friend and ranch hand John Atherton who had helped him purchase it years earlier from rival rancher Manuel Nieto de la Hoz y Costilla. Sather developed the original 10 acres (4 ha) plot of land into a large agricultural settlement with several stores, residences, schools, churches and other buildings over the next few years. By 1908 there were more than 100 residents living on ChINO HILLS RD., CHINO CREEK WAGON ROAD., EAST CHINO SPRINGS RD., KNOLL STREET AND WEST CHINO SPRINGS RD., where they farmed alfalfa hay, cottonseed oilseed production began in 1916 with chrysanthemums being planted at that time), raised chickens (chickens were reared until 1942), produced fruit trees such as apples or bananas (orchard fruits were picked before shipping to markets), made cheese (from raw milk donated by local farmers), baked bread etc.. A post office opened in 1915 along with a schoolhouse on East Chinoche Springs Road which served both residents and visitors for many years until 1954 when it became stately yet modernized California State University at Pomona campus South Campus building . In 1928 an addition to the high school opened named after Mrs Florence Atherton Mrs Robert Murchison Headmaster/ Mistress
The USAF was founded on January 8, 1947 by the United States Congress as a result of the Korean War. The USAF is one of the five branches of the US military and it is responsible for carrying out military operations in all parts of the world. The USAF has an estimated strength of over 1,400,000 active duty members and 725,000 Air National Guard members across 45 states and 10 countries. In addition to its operational responsibilities, the USAF provides support to other branches of the US government through airlift capabilities and intelligence gathering activities. During World War II, three separate services were formed within theAAF: Army Air Forces (AAF), Navy Aeronautics Force (NAF), and Marine Corps Forces Pacific (MCFP). On July 20, 1944 during Operation Crossroads in Japan, theseseparate services merged to form theAAF under First Lieutenant General Curtis LeMay. The merger created a single service that would be known asthe USAF. After World War II ended on September 2nd 1945, control of AF passed from government to service with amendments to Title 15 USC Sections 331-336 which established a new structure forafairspaceflture organization within DoD called Space Defense Command (SDC). This section provided for elements such as Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force Europe (HAEF)and Headquarters American Strategic Air Forces in order to coexist more effectively with NATO allies while still havingcommand authority over American strategic bomber forces located throughout Europe and Asia. In 1948 ADC was transferred from SDCs jurisdiction to Headquarters United States Strategic Air Command(HUSASAC) under First Lieutenant General James Van Fleet who had also been named Director of Plans at HUSASAC after serving as Deputy Commander at RAF Fairford England where he haddirected Bomber Command since 1946. On December 3rd 1948 HUSASAC activated fighter wingrons numbered 139th Fighter Wing stationedat Langley AFB Virginia under Major General Arthur C Arnold became first commanderof 139 FW when command moved from SDC headquarters back into AF units following Arnesons retirement from combat service on October 16th 1949 effective November 13th 1949! WithArnolds arrival command shifted back up again into Level 4 status within AF until commands realignment changes effective March 1951 which moved wings home again into levels 1-4 status pending realignment changes which never happened! Marshall then transferredAFnorthofthe Tennessee Valley Authority area achieving level 5status effective May 1953 becoming Director Of Air Resources Management (). Chino Hills is a small town in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 24,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the city of West Covina. Chino Hills was founded in 1887 by John Sutter and his brother Pleasant Hill. Chino Hills was incorporated as a village on December 5, 1912. The name Chino comes from the word "chinatown" which refers to the area near downtown Los Angeles that had many Chinese residents before World War II when most of Chinatown was destroyed in a bombing raid by the United States military during the Pacific War. The original community plat for Chino Hills listed 12 acres (4 hectares). Today there are only two homes remaining on this original plat: one has been restored and is now used as museum property; and another home, also known as "The Lady's Home", stands derelict but is still valued at $2 million because it could be converted into an affordable workforce development project for low-income people or families with children who need special care and supervision while they are working or attending school. Chino Hills started out as just a small agricultural community with some hundred farmers scattered across six square miles of rural land east of Downtown Los Angeles. By 1915, however, business activity had begun to develop rapidly thanks to new transportation opportunities brought about by railroad construction through nearby Simi Valley and Canoga Park – areas that would later become West Covina – making Chino hills what it is today: an affluent bedroom community located within easy reach of downtown Los Angeles’s nightlife and shopping districts
